We have a discussion going on.  Can you please tell me where it stated and what exactly makes up a family of gages?

I am not exactly sure what you are asking but going to make a small assumption and attempt to answer.
There is no Gage R&R within a family of gages. For example you cannot say that a caliper has a good R&R, although this may be true for measureing one part, it most likely would not work very good for measuring another. Gage R&R’s take into account all variances from operator, gage, and part to produce an output. Any one of the variables may change resulting in different outputs. However all that said some of the AIAG standards  and QS9000 4.11.4 make some provision as to simply take “Appropiate” MSA per “Type” of gage within the control plan. That does lead to some leeway as to performing R&R study on every gage within control plan and thus allows for family grouping, if the feature being measured is similar. I’m sure some will disagree, and I don’t agree personally with interpretation, but never seen it as an issue to argue about, and lets face it, just not worth the breath, if the customer is satisfied.
    Hopefully this clears the water.
