How do you establish objectives for your BB/GBs?  My company, which is early in the SS deployment, typically develops a high level set of objectives and then flows it down to the lower levels.  At the lower levels the objectives become tasks – Do this or that by 6/1 Etc.  In theory the tasks support the top level, but often due to the changing world the tasks do not end up being that supportive (or at least not the best use of time).  My question is this –
For the BB/GB people (we have some full time BBs as well as part time BBs and GBs) how do you st objectives – Complete x projects, Save X dollars, Complete X projects saving Y dollars, Or do you specify specific projects?
I don’t need the in a perfect world answers.  I want something that I can use now that will help move me towards the perfect world (CI and all that).

Just, that’s a World Hunger question with a multi-faceted answer….can’t try to write all of that.
However, a good starting point, at your high level objectives point is to create and utilize a Balanced Scorecard in an effort to assure the company is touching the needs of all stakeholders. It becomes a dashboard for awareness that the improvement efforts are touching the various interests.
From there you have to assess impact and priorities and costs/time to address the issues. Layout a road map of where you are, where you want to go and the most efficient means of getting there based on resources available.

Go to above website. Most of fortune 500 company CEO uses this book to set up BB. This is really good book to read. It gives you overall pictures how BB works, what kind of barrier you will face implemnating BB for group, division or Company to Company.

    Hope it helps, Ken

    JAL,
I set the BB/GB targets as follows:
Maintain acceptable housekeeping of designated work area. Conform to all safety training and personal protection equipment regulations. Work toward improving safety in all facets and encourage others to do the same.

    * Deliver ($1m) in closed projects. This will be accomplished through a combination of 2 or more closed BB projects and the mentoring of a minimum of 3 GB projects (5 stretch).

    * Expectations for those in the Black Belt Candidate position < 12 months and uncertified are to achieve certification prior to 16 months.
    * Expectations for those in the Black Belt Candidate position > 12 months and uncertified are to achieve certification prior to 16 months.

    * Demonstrate ability to teach, coach and deliver problem resolution using the 6-sigma methodology and tool usage.

    * Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication presentation skills through presenting projects status at the project review meetings or PCTs at a minimum quarterly.

    * Update the 6-Sigma Project Tracking System in a timely manner with the attachments listed at a minimum for closure:
    Project Charter-Financial Template-Project Summary
Sustain projects after 6-months of closure with metric attachment showing sustained improvement.

    * Attend business reviews of the areas assigned as a mentor as well as the areas where projects reside. Participate in the meetings with a 6-Sigma mind-set and develop potential projects.

    * Assist the Project Champion in your assigned area with scoping of new projects in-line with business metrics.
I hope this helps you out.  This way I cover more than just completing projects as Six Sigma is just a tool box.  I want my BBs to do their jobs differently because they have been trained in DMAIC.

Is That what I’m supposed to be doing?!?  ;-)
I thought I was just supposed to use MiniTab to make pretty, color graphs and charts that no one really understands for Management.
    Seriously though, this is good!

“Participate in the meetings with a 6-Sigma mind-set”?
Do you fire BB’s if they participate with a business mind-set?

I would hope that a Six Sigma mindset IS a business mindset.
Although, I’m sure it happens more often than not, that people view a Six Sigma mindset to mean that everything can be cured with DMAIC and Minitab.
