I have decided I want to become certified in six sigma. I doubt my company will pay for it. What I wanted to do was to learn it on my own and become certified. I have a MBA in finance and I am familiar with all the statistical concepts.
How would members of this forum recommend I go about doing this without taking expensive courses? What books are geared for passing the exams? A lot of the books I looked at seem to be geared for getting an understanding and not necessarily toward the exams. Are there any inexpensive online courses? Where can I go to take an exam without breaking the bank? Are certain exams more credible than others? Should I go for a black belt or a lower belt to start? There seems to be so much information on the net that it is overwhelming where to begin. If I were going through my job I would just sign up take the class for a week and take an exam.
Thanks in advance

Please do not take this the wrong way, but if all you are looking for is a certification, print something out on your home computer. Now a days the market is so saturated with with tens of thousands of certifications, it mean almost nothing. Hiring Mgrs and people who really understand the importantance of process engineering, could careless about your certification, what they want to see is your skills in the six sigma tools and past experience. If you are out to put something on your wall, again, use your home computer (please be creative). If any company hires you because you are ONLY certified, without project and implementation experience, run away.
In the end, to answer your question, do not waste your money on online courses, no online course will teach you the experience or how to be a change agent.
Cheers,
Plastic..(and yes this is my opion… good luck..LOL)0October 11, 2005 at 8:19 pm #128175

I suggest you search this forum and site for previous discussions on certification. Doing so ahead of time might have saved you from some of the flaming that’s probably going to come.
(I personally like the “1 week of class and pass an exam” comment. It definitely indicates you have no idea of what Six Sigma really is about.)

0October 11, 2005 at 8:36 pm #128179Based on some of the responses I have received let me follow up with an explanation. I am currently working on a project on my job that is closely tied into six sigma. So I am getting experience in the concepts. It is because of this I decided to look into certification. I do not think my department will pay for it so I am preparing to do it on my own in case they will not. I will have practical experience along with a certification when I pass.

What the forum is telling you is the certification without MBB support and properly crafted projects for you to work on (which you will be unable to do yourself) will not mean much. Good luck.0October 11, 2005 at 9:52 pm #128186How it comes?I’m participating in the villnova’s master SS Certification program:GB-Lean-SS-BB.At the end it would cost me some $7500 and I will not be certified until I go for ASQ.
0October 11, 2005 at 10:08 pm #128187Randy,
What is your specific reason for wanting certification? If your just wanting to do it for self, then why bother, if you already have some idea about doing projects and statistics. Unless you plan to move on to another job in the near future then certification is not going to do much for you, There is alot books out there that can help in your projects and you won’t have to spend a lot of money to acheive success. Evaluate your reasons for wanting this, present this to your employers, you may be suprised, and some lucky consulting group may get to implement Six Sigma at your company. But as has been stated, certification without mentoring, will be cutting yourself short of what Six Sigma is all about.

I have the same need as Randy, I wanna learn more about SS no matter I can certify or not. However, I need to VISUALIZE my knowledge and qualification. Not all the interviewers have the same SS knowledge as ppl in this forum. Interviewers believe in the certification even they have no idea the institute is good bad, how sad.0 -
