Getting Lean or Six Sigma Experience?

I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to how someone could get lean event or six sigma project experience if they do not currently work for a company engaged in either discipline. I know somebody who is very smart, and is in the process of learing about lean from an academic point of view. But they are currently unemployed. Are there any great ideas out there?

You are correct that this person will not really learn or retain the knowledge without practicing it.
For people who I’ve known in similar situations I’ve found they are successful in finding someone who will allow them to “practice” at their firm. Check with the employers of family, friends or network through any club or social organization.
Typically if you can get a decision maker’s attention for 5 minutes to explain the value proposition of “I’ll fix something for free if you let me.” a project can be found.
