I have the following data for my testing project. Accepted Defects, Rejected Defects, Defects based on severity, and 4 QA engineers defect data. This is an independent validation group. So customer has not defined what are his requirements for me to come up with CTQ tree. My aim is to reduce the rejected defects and improve the QA efficiency. What would be my CTQ if customer doesnt specify anything in his SLA?

    Robert,
You mentioned “rejected defects” in your question. At what level is it considered a “defect”. Preferable this call would be up to your customer, but someone is deciding the level. That is your specification. Now hopefully, this is the same measure that is important to your customer. If so, then you have your CTQ and a spec for it.

My problem is: customer has not defined his software requirements. He has a legacy system and he is replcaing it with new one which he is using elsewhere. He is customizing it as per US requirements. He has no software requirements doc. My goal is to test it based on its current behaviour. The “rejected defects” for me are obviously due to unclear software specs. My concern is:
    1. how do I reduce these rejected defects?(mind you customer is not ready to cooperate)
    2. how do i improve my QA efficiency using SS methodology/techniques?

    Robert,
Ask your client what it is s/he is trying to achieve with the new software. Measure the success of the old versus the new based on what is trying to be achieved.
I am not sure exactly what it is you are facing, but it sounds like an uncooperative client is not an good start at all.
You have to have some CTQ measure you can use to at least use SPC if not the entire tool set of Six Sigma.
    Good Luck,
    Dr. Scott

Thanks a lot Scott, I appreciate your help. Probably I will have a more sensible question, once I get the VOC. Thanks again…Robert

    Robert,
You are welcome. That is why I respond here from time to time; hopeful that I might help someone. Heck that is why I am in the business to begin with.
Try to get some measure of performance of the old system and compare it to the new. Chances are, you will need the additional tools of Six Sigma to make the new system do what is required or wanted, or accomplish the objectives. But defining the objectives or CTQs is essential.
Let me know if I can help more.

If at some point your measure ‘Rejected Defects’ (RD) is influencing a CTQ, then try to co-relate and what would be the maximum % Rejected Defects’ can you tolerate to still meet the CTQ.
In case your measure RD does not have any bearing on the CTQ but is leading to re-work, internal process inefficiency, etc. then let your internal process owner define a target for you.
Just my views. All the Best!
     Cheers – Neal

Thanks a ton for your suggestion, I really appreciate it. As I had mentioned earlier, I need to revisit my whole process again. I have a non-cooperative customer who is just not willing to define what he wants and what is expected out of my team. He just needs a good quality application, lots of good defects!(am still trying to define this) and good test cases to detect those good defects! However he has not quantified anything. PerhapsVOC will certainly help me. But, I am just not able to define my problem statement – is it reducing number of rejected defects? is it QA efficiency in terms of good test cases? or is it number of defects? Its a kind of parallel testing project(not very similar) and I have no software requirements doc.
If anyone has a good VOC template for testing projects, do let me know.
    Thanks again.

    dear how are you
i think your fuzzy front end is just fuzzy. but no need to worry, you can benchmark some standards, you can work on QFD which will tell you about VOC.
I have got sheet. please tell me about your email. i will email you.
    my email address is
    [email protected]
    thanks
