I have been watching this healthcare bill fiasco for quit sometime now and had a few thoughts on how the DMAIC process was similar to what is going on and why this is such a train wreck.

    Define Phase

The big Y seems to be this “The Health Care system is broke”
While this is all good, it appears to me that no one can tell us what exactly is broken.
-Some say its the fact that 30 million americans do not have healthcare.
Ok, good point, but I believe that probably 80% of these folks without healthcare have made a concious decision not to buy it. They would rather spend their money on something else.
-Some say drug companies have the politician ear and in the insurance mans back pocket.
Not sure how to fix that, but if its true then ethics committee could be set up to solve that issue
-Some say insurance simply too high
Ok I agree, but until we stop undocumented people from using the emergency room like their personal clinic that will never change.

Now before I go any further, “I want to make clear” (sound familiar) I’m all for an overhaul of the healthcare system. But its obviously clear to me that the government has done a very poor job at defining exactly what needs to be fixed.

    Measure phase

Can only assume someone has looked at this and said well we have an out of control process. I think we all agree

    Analyze

Just throw $950 billion at it. that will fix it.

    Implementation

Ok now we get to the point we are at today. Every poll I have seen shows that a majority of Americans do not want this bill. Now that sucks for a bunch of people but how can the government justify implementing a bill that no one knows what is even in it, including the President.

    Control

    Government Healthcare.

This what I believe, We need a complete all encompassing healthcare bill that will solve the problems we have. The biggest problem I have is the Problems are not defined and the project should not move forward until all the “Y”s are identified or we will be doing this again in a few years, and I will bet we still have 30 million Americans without healthcare.

Just My Opinion, What do you guys think

    Chad,

I’m afraid the situation is more serious than you describe because a similar argument applies to the economy.

Just a view from across the pond!

I not familiar with your system

But it looks like a DFSS ( DMADV ) project – not a DMAIC

    Where ‘ s VoC Analysis , QFD etc ?

That was exactly my point. There is no VoC, that is the problem.

A similar argument indeed, but no where near the ramification of the healthcare bill.

    Chad,

I just believe it is another horse and cart situation …

According to Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) the Senate bill bankrolls the very companies the president says are taking advantage of the American people.

Moreover, I believe universal healthcare should be a goal, not a right.

Some years ago, I met a Professor of Chinese medicine and when he found out about my interests in ‘Chinese Systems Thinking, he explained his use of this system to study economics. In simple terms, he associates the economy with the Seasons.

This weekend, the American people must decide whether they support planting seeds in winter.

For myself, having watched the Movie ‘The City of Vice,’ I’m suspicious of those who would stop at nothing to do good.

    Cheers,
    Andy
