I am making a presentation to my leadership team regarding the importance of taking the correct action in response to special cause events vs. common cause events.
Does anyone have some good practical examples I can use to show how the WRONG action is taken (special action in response to a common cause issue or common cause action in response to a special cause issue).

    Thanks!

If  you  arrive late at  your  work because  of  special  cause (one hour  delay),because  of  some  new  construction  work.

My favorite example is when my wife starts adjusting the thermostat in the house when she thinks it’s too hot/cold. The central HVAC system would be expected to operate within a few degrees range around the set temp. That would be common cause variation. However when my wife feels cold and the system is at it’s lower temp range she will bump up the setting. Then when it gets too hot she bumps it back down and so the cycle continues. She has introduced special cause variation to a process that was not broken. Her tampering has actually caused a wider variation than would have been present if the system were left alone.

Yes, Outlier – but The One Who Must Be Obeyed has the right to introduce Special Cause whenever she feels like it. Which, if your experience is similar to mine, is quite often.

Mrs Stevo changes is so often, it has moved into the common cause bucket.

You are correct, Brandon. “Management” will often disregard sound data and introduce special cause despite attempts to diplomatically persuade them to do otherwise. Mrs. Outlier is no exception there.
