Guess your teach suggested you and your sister check out this site and try to scam an answer to your assignment so you can hit the mall and chill. A great idea would be to spend some of that chill’in time to try and learn sumthing so you guys can try to put it in your own words. Look to the left….no the other left and check out the link called “New to Six Sigma?” Try reading some…yeah I know reading is a drag and then putting that brain to use and frame an answer in your own words. Between the two of you, there should be enough IQ to do it. If not, give me your MySpace ID and we can chat offline.

One simple way is to check out and read the following book, at your local library, or purchase at a local bookstore: What is Six Sigma? by Pete Pande and Larry Holpp ISBN: 0-07-138185-6.

Since you obviously aren’t real smart (or as I suspect – not real motivated), I’ll make it simple –

Unfortunately, on this forum there are a lot of comments that are uncalled for, dont take it too personally. The key is to listen to the straight forward answers and try to uncover the value add in the smart-a$$ answers. You might find the latter to be more helpful.
Now, is there any specific concept that you need a further explanation on?

You tell me how you would interpret the above. Maybe not Valley Girl but I would rule out Rocket Scientist. Do a little research, that’s what school is all about. Learn to think and formulate your own hypotheses and conclusions. If you have specific and well thought out questions you will receive all the help you need on this Forum, including me.0September 25, 2006 at 11:09 pm #143815

I don’t believe that they don’t want to do work. This forum is one of the NEW literacies. There is no reason why you can’t combine a new literacy with traditional…… I’m 34 years old and when my company rolled out the Six Sigma Quality Initiative and started talking about it, and coming up with various initiatives, I was also very confused, even AFTER reading about it. I found this book very informative: “Six Sigma for Everyone” by George Eckes. It’s very simply stated and explains the most basic (and advanced topics). But to help in the meantime….please do not copy and paste this into a paper, you’ll need to do your own research and reference appropriate copyrighted materials.
What is Six Sigma?: Six Sigma (6ó) is a statistical metric used to describe the quality of a process in a state of near perfection with only 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO). It is a business philosophy that matches a companys basic strategies to the customers needs and expectations, and utilizes a project focused methodology resulting in significant financial gains for the company. Six Sigma is a team approach that combines technical leaders with advanced statistical knowledge and subject matter experts. In other words, Six Sigma is a powerful strategy for sustained success 1. 1: The Six Sigma Way, by Peter S. Pande, Robert P. Neuman, Roland R. Cavanagh, page 3.
§ Six Sigma is a state of near perfection that has been achieved by some companies for select processes. Attaining a Four Sigma performance level, especially in a service organization, is considered an achievement that will yield enormous benefits.
Origins of Six Sigma
The concept of Six Sigma originated in the 1980’s as Motorola, in response to the threat of it’s Japanese counterpart, got excited about the concept of zero defects. Further, the concept bloomed to Allied Signal and General Electric (GE), and as a result it became news in 1996 that GE had saved over $1 Billion of cost by using the Six Sigma methodology. In academics it is still in infancy. It is dependent on the management gurus for implementation. https://www.isixsigma.com/
DMAIC Overview: Six Sigma utilizes an improvement model which consists of 5 phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. Through a well-defined project, the DMAIC methodology characterizes and optimizes processes to verify root causes and permanently fix issues.
DFSS Overview: Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a methodology that is used to create a new product, process or service. DFSS links the customer needs to the design details that achieve the desired performance. Although variations exist, phases are commonly referred to as Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify.
So, in a nutshell, you look at a particular process and you go through the Define, measure, and anlyze stages and only after that can you decide as a team if the process you are analyzing can be improved and fixed permanently or COMPLETELY replaced.
Solutions only come at the very end – that was the hardest concept for all of us to grasp. Everything can be measured and tracked statistically. You have different Belt levels that are involved in each project, Master Black Belt, Black Belt, Champions, Green Belt, Yellow Belt, and each has a different role in the process.
I hope that helps!!0September 26, 2006 at 12:05 am #143816For someone who said not to copy and paste – that was one heck of a copy and paste job.
Lisa – got any thoughts of your own?

0September 26, 2006 at 2:29 am #143820Well kids, it’s like this … everything was fine then along came some guys who wanted to make lots and lots of money … so they invented a whole lot of rubbish and called it six sigma … that’s why it’s very hard to understand.
0September 26, 2006 at 3:33 am #143821Peter,
So let me get this straight, because a bunch of guys who wanted to make lots and lots of money came along… so they invented a whole lot of rubbish and called it six sigma? It had nothing to do with wanting toserve the customer better?
do a better job than the present process was performing?
escablish a more consistent output to a process?
quit wasting time, money, and resources (a little redundant) because we can’t afford to?
Along your reasoning, it would seem any service or consulting area of expertise was created solely because someone first wanted to make money. Correct? It is not because there was a need somewhere to do better???
I’m sorry, but if someone comes to me selling something that I never asked for and don’t see any need for then they won’t make much money off of me. But then I guess I am just not thinking about this correctly…0September 26, 2006 at 5:16 am #143826Hey Stan, I referenced “copyrighted material”. I even footnoted the information – my intent was to consolidate it for them, and for them to know that what I wrote was taken from another source/sources. My experience has been as a contributor for several initiatives – the in the trenches, first hand experience feedback person, gathering metrics, etc. I never said I was a guru, which from your tone, you obviously think you are.
Thanks for being so nice. The world needs more people like you.
Yes, I do have thoughts of my own actually – I wish that they would incorporate Six Sigma in the Public School system, as Colorado has started to do. Not on direct teaching methods with children, but for various processes in place in the districts across the states. I value the methodology and practices greatly.0September 26, 2006 at 2:10 pm #143839Your advice was “not to just copy and paste” and then you did just that.
