    I was speaking to one of the residents about this portal and she asked me if I knew of any hospitals that have implemented Six Sigma. I had to bow out of that conversation gracefully, and I ran here to post :). Can anyone help me by providing the names of hospitals or HMOs that are implementing Six Sigma?Thanks!Wendy

    University of VA Health System was reported in the Journal of Health Care Compliance “Uses Six Sigma Model to Improve Performance” in the  coding process  through the Audit and Compliance Services Department.  Sept-Oct 2002.  GE Medical Systems trained UVA to implement the six sigma methodologies.  Pam Thomson , BB, UVA can be reached at 434/982-1003.

    OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois implemented Six Sigma a little over a year ago.  We’ve trained 17 Black Belts and are getting ready to train 4 more Black Belts and 3 Master Black Belts.

    There are numerous hospitals that have implemented Six Sigma worldwide. There are varying degrees of implementation…ranging from departmental use of Six Sigma to address a burning operational or clinical need to complete organization-wide transformation.     Wendy, I was priviledged to see a presentation by Greg Stark, CEO of Thibodoeaux Regional Hospial, Thibodoeaux, LA. at the Six Sigma for Healthcare ISSSP seminar 4/2002 in St. Louis.  He has been very successful in implementing Six Sigma in every facet of his hospital operation.  This is a small, regional, non-profit hospital.  He is a dynamic speaker w/ the documentation to back up his claims.  I encourage you to contact him.

While titled “Leadership Transformations: Successful Strategies in Healthcare,” it does include presentations on Six Sigma by his team and other U.S. healthcare providers.     There have been several across US – might make sense to reach out to AHA, and see if they keep some type of database on who has implemented Six Sigma!  Good luck.

    Does anyone have the following statistics on hospitals using six sigma?
    What are the nurse to patient ratios in the critical care units and telemetry?
    Do you use charge nurses in these units?
    If you use charge nurses are they counted in the nurse to patient ratios?
    Do you use a budget system that uses hours per patient per day?
    Is your nurse manager in these units a hands on care giver or do they act more as an administrator?

    I conducted the first wave of Black Belt training for OSF.  I am interested who pursued the Master Black Belt track. 
    Can you provide a list of projects undertaken at OSF as examples of what can happen when Six Sigma is properly deployed?

    BayCare Health System in Florida ( 9 hospital group in the Tampa/St.Pete area) is in the initial phases of training a group of 13 Black Belts and adopting Six Sigma as an organizational quality standard

    The North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System is a 15 hospital system located in New York.  We currently have 18 trained Black Belts, 2 Master Black Belts and over 60 completed Six Sigma projects.
