If you are the top performance employee in your company, you will be selected by the Top Management to be trained and become a Black Belt. It is not you to decide whether you want to become a Black Belt.

Or you can take the initiative and either talk to your boss about it and ask to be on “the list”, or order a SSBB primer through ASQ, study the material, complete a project and take the exam. Either one will show that you are dedicated to getting your certification, and most companies will look more favorably on that, instead of waiting to be asked.

Song – rather than just waiting and hoping to be offered an opportunity to become a Black Belt, shouldn’t a person desiring to become a Black Belt express an interest in doing so?   Granted management should select the candidates but don’t wait for natural selection to manifest itself – help it along.   Let’s respond to the questioner a little differently.  How about, find out all you can about Six Sigma and the role of the Black Belt in your organization inclusive of what the job entails, required skill sets, selection criteria and reporting relationship, prepare yourself as best you can for consideration, and express an interest in being selected for the job.   Express your interest to the right people and keep it on their radar screen.

There is nothing “magic” about being a “top performer” in your company or even the company choosing you to be SSMBB….. or green belt…. or anything else.  I agree, you should voice your desire to your superiors; however, you CAN become a Black Belt on your own…. as long as you have the money….. even though most of us don’t.
My suggestion is to first work on some Green Belt training, develop your knowledge in statistical methods, then work towards your Black Belt.  If you are determined to gain BB status, I’m sure you can find someone/company to sponser your endeavors.
Best of luck to you in your journey!!!
