X is clasified as dependant variable or independant variable ? And why ?

X is a independant variable as it is not derived from higher level variables…not sure if there are any better answers, Regards

May be a simple answer John -X is a independant variable as it is independant of any factors….Does that help ?

X is  indepenant and  Y is  dependant

The only information I can provide about X and Y is the following:
X the 24th letter of the English alphabet, and a consonant.
Y is the 25th letter of the English alphabet, and a semivowel.
If you dont provide the equation were the variables are, there is no way that question is answered.
in y = f(x), x is the independant variable
in x = f(y), y is the independant variable

John, Firefox’s answer is right on. All I would add is that X is treated as the independent variable solely by definition.
Someone had to be the independent variable so we chose X.
