How does HR get involved in the Six Sigma process?

I think the real question is how is it possible that HR does not get involved. This is team based cultural change — last time I checked this is the domain of HR.

I believe HR should be involved in the rollout of the program.

However, there are a bunch of Six Sigma projects you could find in the HR department. Timeliness of hiring people. Retaining people. Timeliness of benefit payouts. Timeliness of tuition refunds, etc…..

I agree wholeheartedly. Ask anyone in a larger sized corporation how well their HR managers meet their needs (CTQs), and get ready for the deluge of VOC. Then all you have to do is prioritize the projects (based on employee retention, cost savings to the business, increased productivity, etc.) and get to work!

The costs associated with any implementation in the HR function can EASILY be recouped in the course of a year.

Think about the opportunity to reduce variability…
Is there much variability in the HR process(s)?
Yeow – there’s LOTS of opportunity there, I’d say.

My question – What would you say the “critical Xs” for for such processes ought to be?

As a new “Greenbelt” within the HR group in my company, I believe very strongly that HR needs to partner with any implementation of Six Sigma. While still struggling myself, I don’t think you can implement 6 Sigma successfully without the culture changes mentioned in a previous post–that will definitely be one of the challenges in our organization! If there are any other HR types out there that are involved with 6 Sigma implementation, I would love to hear from you.
