Are there any hospitals using 6 sigma methologies, have they established benchmarks for the core processes?

I haven’t yet, but am interested in expoloring six sigma options in clinical support services such as laboratory medicine, radiology and pharmacy. I would be interested to hear which areas you are wanting to look at and to hear of others who have already gone down this route

Here are a few Hospitals I know of that are implmenting Six Sigma
Mount Carmel Health System — Columbus HO
Commonwealth Health System — Bowling Green KY
Luther Middlefort Hospital — Eau Claire WI
Fairview Health Systems — Minneapolis MN
I may be able to get you in contact with folks from some of these organizations.  I don’t have direct contacts, but kind of a six degrees of separation thing.  email me at [email protected] or call 616 383 3400.

Quest Diagnostics laboratories is working on becoming a Six Sigma company by 2004 – we started in 2000.  It’s not a hospital operation, but we have collaborated with hospitals in the Pittsburgh and Sonora areas to implement Six Sigma improvements.  Core metrics have been developed in the following areas: Support  areas (HR, IT), Collect, Transport, and Process the specimen.  Also Testing and Billing.
For example, in billing we have metrics around 3rd party cash reimbursement defects, and invoice defects.
