Hello Everybody,I need some advice on becoming a black belt certification. The dilemma that I have is that I hold a BS in chemical engineering, but my current job is in molecular and microbiology. I am looking to go back to school for biomedical engineering for my masters and thought I might do a black belt certification to make my self a better candidate in the future. Do you think it is a good idea to be certified? Will it make me more marketable? I thought I would be able to get a job as an engineer after my BS, but to no avail, even though I had very good internship experience in semiconductor processing as well as water treatment project (now a spin-off company).

Rahul,Good evening and thanks for your posting. It is unfortunate that you had such a tough time getting a job specifically as a chemical engineer.A masters in biomedical engineering is terrific. Regarding whether getting a Six Sigma Black Belt, too, is a “good idea” and whether it will make you more marketable — unfortunately, the answer is “it depends”. It depends on what you really want to do. A Six Sigma Black Belt is typically the Leader of improvement project, using the discipline of Six Sigma. If you learn “Design for Six Sigma” (DFSS) also, then the Black Belt may also lead projects to develop improved designs.Does this sound like what you want to do after you get your MS in biomedical engineering? And, do the companies that you would be targeting have these kinds of positions available?
    Best regards,

Thanks for your reply. I am very interested in Design and i would love to lead a team, however, I want to learn first and earn my way into a leadership role. I have very little industry experience, hence why at this junction, trying very hard to learn new material and improve my engineering fundamentals through an advanced degree.I still believe it will be a good idea on my part to get certified, while I am waiting to get accepted into a graduate school.Do you have any suggestions on choosing program, speciality, and experience?I have to work to support my family so I am going to go to school in the evenings…Rahul
