Hi everyone! I’m currently going through Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training, and would love some help to grasp this! I work in the print shop for a company that employees approx. 500 people. It’s just me and another guy that runs the print shop. All our work is done on high-volume digital printers/copiers.

Also would love to get a few ideas of a Green Belt project. Please reply back with help. If more background info is needed please let me know! TIA

I used to work in a print shop as my first job in the military. You could look at the process of receiving a job, through bindery. I am sure the machine you use does most or all of it at once, but you can look at how often the machine stops because you have to load paper (ie if someone forgets to load it) and the distance from the copier you paper source is. Sometimes you can reduce the time of “resupply” by either prestaging paper and supplies close to the machines.

    Just a thought.

Well to measure downtime we used from the time the machine went down, response of the technician (if used), and noted the time the machine came back up and was able to print again.

For distance — just look at how long it takes to get paper, each time you load it. Whether it is before the job starts or when the paper runs out. If it takes a 5 minutes to get paper (count the steps). Then look at if you preposition the paper closer to the machine then do the same thing.

    Hi, Ashly.
Well we can start at any stage. I think that you should first contact ur customer. They are the key fulcrum. Get suggestion, needs for further improvement, sit with then on weekly basis. Sort out the production trends. Are you meeting the expectation? This will be the source of GB project.
After that follow DMAIC carefully. Tools that is applicable.
    Above all create awareness.

Just your luck, I work for a Printer with simular intrests. I Have a Black Belt and what I would ask is what if anything are you keeping data on? i.e. toner usage vs. cost, paper spoilage, how much do you waste down to the sheet. Set-up times, run times vs. machine capacity. I have all kinds of suggestions, need to know the data thats being kept. 25 years in the Printing industry at your service. Feel free to contact me at my home e-mail at [email protected].
