I work for a major insurance company that is seriously considering establishing a Six Sigma program. Does anyone have results and metrics from other insurance companies who implemented Six Sigma. Also, I would appreciate some feedback on how I should tout and position Six Sigma.

As a former Black Belt for a large insurer I can guarantee you that Six Sigma will bring huge gains to an insurer and its customers. Whether reducing cycle times on processing apps or designing new processes for handling new insurance regulations, the Six Sigma approach is what should be taught and stressed.

I would also like to find out more information on initiating a Quality Assurance program in the insurance industry. My section used to be called Data Quality. We recently were renamed Quality Assurance. Some of our functions will include automated balancing and statistical reporting (to NAII ect.). These things I’m familiar with. The TQM and Six Sigma stuff I have trouble relating to a service industry. Can you provide any insight? Are there any roadmaps?

    Sam,
AIG and Prudential are applying both SEI-CMM and Six Sigma to their insurance software development arenas.
    Bill,
You should keep recruitment issues in the iSixSigma Job Shop before someone slaps your hand.Β  The WebMaster is fairly testy about misuse of the forum!

    Patirck,
I work in the insurance industry as a Process Manager.Β  We use a combination of techniques to reach a determination as to how to improve a process.Β  Recently, I have been reading more in depth about Six Sigma and really like their methodology.Β  Do you have any resources you would be willing to share? or could you point me in the direction of a training resource? (self study, online or workshops)Β  I am somewhat limited in terms of how much I can spend so I am trying to evaluate the most economical way to learn more about Six Sigma.
    Thanks,
    Erica

Depending on what lines of insurance you are in, the existing insurers that are relevant will be different. Nevertheless, GE Financial and Bank of America have a strong history of using insurance to improve fulfillment and call center operations. They also use it in front-offlice applications, but for someone starting out, the back office is where the money and low hanging fruit is. When I want to see who else is using Six Sigma, I often search job boards like Monster.com to see who is hiring six sigma positions…that is usually a great indicator.

I work in a similiar role for an Insurance Organization, if you do life insurance, check and see if you have a membership to LOMA, they have a organizational improvement committee that may be of benefit to you.

It was a really a serious issue for Insurance companies world wide to implement Six Sigma for better and accurate result in performance as well as providing quality to it’s customrs . But the real problem which companies in Insurance sector was facing was how to implement it and where to approach as there is no set parameter for its studies or institutes supporting this type of cource so what i suggest you is this try to do diploma in quality management from online or ground schools of management you can approach online institutes like eminds which is offering cources like banking and insurance compliance and other quality cources on insureance.
    hope this will help you
    regards
    Mark

This is a rather dated question and thread, but I’d like to revive it to solicit input and interest from those in the insurance industry who are either 1) implementing a formal Six Sigma program, 2) using Six Sigma concepts for process improvement and/or management in the absence of a formally launched deployment, or 3) interested in undertaking one of the above.
I am currently in the insurance industry with one of the world’s leading brokers, and I’m interested in networking and sharing best practices.

I think AIG and Prudential have been mentioned before. I also know GEICO is early in an implementation. I think there are others, but can’t lay specific names to them.

I believe Allstate has a limited program as well. I think we might want to define the question a little bit better. I think the question should be something along the lines, of is there a recognized six sigma in the organization being driven by the CEO as a glboal strategy.

I’m not sure GEICO qualifies. If I’m not mistaken, GEICO is US only, not global. Also, since GEICO is a Berkshire-Hathaway holding, I think Warren Buffet is officially CEO, and he isn’t driving Lean Six Sigma across all the Berkshire-Hathaway holdings. The chief officer of GEICO (I think he is president) is the highest ranking one driving the implementation.

Ok, when I meant CEO I meant organizationally. I know for instance within our global organization in the UK we have a six sigma initiative, however, globally we do not have one. I just think that a definition would help to understand, what it means to be implementing within financial services.

Operational definitions are always more difficult than you think they are going to be.Β  ;-)
I agree that it would help, but I’m just too tired right now to help you hammer one into shape. Sorry.

Knowing that insurance companies are inherently risk adverse and they tend to be tactical versus strategic. How were you able to make gains and get buy-in that lasted longer than 2-3 years?
I would love to chat about your successes as well as some of the barriers.
