I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer on internet metrics. I need to find out what our company should be measuring! Any ideas on what the industry standards should be?

    Thanks
    Kelly

    Well, the golden oldies are:
    page views (not hits)
    # sessions (unique visitors)
    time per session

and you should find out where they came in from and when they are heading out to. For instance, if you run an automotive repair shop and want to provide tips to keep people at your site and notice that they are leaving your site for Johnny’s hot rod shop (who is a competitor), then obviously you are not satisfying one of their customer needs (potentially).

You should also analyze the clikc path of the user, especially if you are trying to route them through a certain way. For instance, how many people abandoned their shopping cart before the purchase? Why? How can you stop this from occuring?

    Just my thoughts,
    Darryl

You shouldn’t worry so much about industry specific metrics. Yes you need them, but remember that you are operating a business after all. The same fundamentals of customer service, response time, meeting customer needs, etc. are applicable to the internet and should not be forgotten behind all of the glitz and glamor of web reporting metrics.

    Best,
    Tom

There’s an interesting article on internet metrics and the tracking by the companies and third party establishments on metrics. It’s a good read:
