    Hi everybody !
I’m curious if someone got an answer to the question : how to always have parts available ,but not to have high $$$ tied in inventory ? –  for not-predictable processes and thousands of parts involved….
    Thank you in advance.

Consignment stock. Work out a deal with  your supplier to maintain their inventory in your facility. You pay them when you ship. It is a Sweet Deal if you can negotiate it.

    Thanks Ron ,
This is really neat , but is it really feasible ? I mean ,I’m not sure if I would do this if I were one of the suppliers ….

Sorry to butt in on this thread, but to support what Ron has said – we do the same thing.  In effect your stores area beomes like a bonded warehouse – you only pay for the parts as they are withdrawn from the consignment stock.
Ron is right, it’s a great idea, and it works really well – you just need to get your suppliers to agree to it – and that shouldn’t be too hard as they get the same sales in the end, anyway.

    Ovidiu,
I agree with James and Ron. It does happen and it isn’t that unusual.
I have also seen where companies have set up Kanban’s (in a very loose use of the term) and have let the companies know they are responsible to maintain that Kanban with X amount of inventory. The place where the Kanbans were located was called the “JIT Warehouse” so the plan actually had problems from the start but it could be iterated to work better.
I am traveling so I don’t have access to my books and I can’t remember the name of the speaker manufacturer (I think it was Bose) that presented this concept. They actually have their suppliers representative in their facility acting as the Purchasing Agent for their products. The rep is accountable to make sure there are always parts on hand and can cut PO’s for the purchase of their own products. They have access to schedules and make their own decisions on stock levels. I taked to the guys that did the presentation but I have not actually seem it work. They seemed to feel it was going well.
I can find more information if you are interested.

    Ovidiu,
You are welcome. I wish I could be more positive on the speaker company. It seemed like an interesting idea and it would be nice to see how it was working.
    Good luck.
