It just dawned on me that 100% of our MBB/BB consultants were laid off or fired from other staff quality positions. Moreover, there don’t seem to be a lot of job postings out there for BBs/MBBs.As a staff BB in the throes of a struggling deployment, I have to wonder, was becoming a BB career suicide?

I wouldn’t  think of it as career suicide at all. However, if you ask me, “do I see a long term need for BB’s and MBB’s consulting or performing a Q&P role?” I would have to say, No. The reason is, I think of BB or MBB certification as an advanced degree in a set of skills, NOT as a job title, not unlike an MBA degree. Do you see people employed as or job postings for the job title, “MBA?” No, but there are plenty of jobs for which having an MBA will make you a good candidate, just as there are plenty of jobs for which having a BB or MBB will make you qualified.
What other skills do you have that combined with BB or MBB certification will make you marketable? Stop thinking of BB or MBB as a job and start thinking of it as a skillset. “Six Sigma” and “Lean” will one day become passe in the business world, but the fundamental skills you learned will not. They will just be packaged as something else that seems new and exciting. Toyota Production System, anyone?

    Career potential, YES.
But that doesn’t absolve us of the responsibility to keep our eyes/ears/networks attuned to improved opportunities.
The info you mentioned seems to indicate a cultural shift for the worse within your company.   You might want to update “Old Betsy” (CV/RES) and start looking for cultures more suited to your skillset/experience/interests.
