Ken TheriotParticipant@Ken-TheriotInclude @Ken-Theriot in your post and this person will
be notified via email.Does anyone have a quick kanban simulation idea for training?
Ken0August 24, 2006 at 8:39 pm #142302The “Dot spot” Company game. 2 hours, for 7 participants plus observer and customer. Nice simulation game and easy to administer.

Ken TheriotParticipant@Ken-TheriotInclude @Ken-Theriot in your post and this person will

Ken0August 25, 2006 at 1:51 am #142311Ken,
If you post your e-mail address I will send you the package with instructions tomorrow. It is pretty self-explanatory. Regards!0August 25, 2006 at 2:48 am #142312If you don’t mind, I’d like a copy of your “dot spot” game. We have a dot game that we use for training, but it’s not really a kanban simulation. Thanks in [email protected]
0August 25, 2006 at 4:31 am #142316Adam, if we are talking about the same game, then kanban is one element of the simulation (third round) in addition to others such as pull vs. push, batch vs. one-piece flow, WIP, cell design, work balancing, quality, and kanban. It is very difficult to isolate the kanban system from the “lean package”. I don’t even see any sense in simulating a kanban system in isolation. This game is to introduce the relationship of the key concepts and how they relate that can then be elaborated on in more detail by showing the different types of kanbans. I will send you the instructions by EOD tomorrow, but it may well be the same game that you are already using. So, don’t be disappointed :-).
0August 25, 2006 at 6:49 am #142318Goodmorning Hans,
Is it possible to mail me a copy of the Kanban game.We are on our way to implement Kanban.Maybe this simulatian can take away scepsis by some people.
Thanx in advance,
Bernard
PS Hans seems a Dutch name to me. Where are you from?
0August 25, 2006 at 1:07 pm #142338Bernard,
Almost right. I always introduce myself in training as coming from North Dakota, but the reality is I’m a “verrotte muff”, i.e. the big country next to the Netherlands. Spent many years in Amsterdam though, great little country!
Anyway, post your e-mail address and I will send it later today. Et toi, t’es Francais? A plus tard!
0August 25, 2006 at 2:48 pm #142345It does sound like the same game. We have altered the game a bit and found it works well. If you’d like I could send you the way we run it. We run the first round as screwed up as possible, then we make them create a value stream map, brainstorm and then create a PICK chart. We’ll let them implement just about anything they want with a few exceptions. Then the third round we’ll give them a set demand so they have to come up with standard work in progress and figure their takt time then complete the requirement. We also have them establish the right size buffer of stickers and paper. Usually the teams never establish an effective kanban.
0August 25, 2006 at 2:56 pm #142347Adam,
I’d be very interested to see your changes. I also made some changes, but haven’t documented them. Like you, I “screw up” the process in the first run to show the impact of out-of-control processes on any process and then move into the mapping etc. I also only allow them to prioritize the changes that they make and have them pick 3 at a time in order to simulate that in some instances improvements may be a continuous cycle. If you don’t mind, send it to [email protected].
Thanks in advance!0August 25, 2006 at 3:07 pm #142349Hey Hans,
I don’t want to give many trouble, but is it possible to send me your Kanban game too. I will introduce in my plant some Lean trainning and activities, your game would be very apreciatted.

We are in early stage to omplement Kanban. Training with lectures is not effective. Your simmulation sounds excellent.
If it is OK, can you please e-mail instructions etc.
Thanks.

0December 14, 2007 at 2:11 am #166127I know I’m replying to an old post, but scanning the responses I couldn’t see any mention of the Buckingham Game.It uses various colors of lego brick. I’ve used it and it went well, it’s fun and gets people involved.

Adam L BowdenParticipant@Adam-L-BowdenInclude @Adam-L-Bowden in your post and this person will
be notified via email.I’m kind of bemused by this request. Kanban implementation is
very simple but gets more complicated when you statistically size it
for optimization reasons.
Kankan implementation, on the appropriate segment of inventory,
will drive 50 to 95% reduction in inventory – I do not see the reason
to simulate this very simple concept – it’s more of a “go do” and
see the results.Am I missing a point here ?Adam
