Hey everyone! I am hoping to tap into some of the creative individuals out there. I am looking for an art idea that ties into the Military life and LLean Six Sigma. I have searched for a while online just to come up empty handed. This will be a going away gift for an Active Duty Air Force Greenbelt. Looking for something in the same style as the ones items sold on squadronposter.com if any have some great ideas and can send me a draft that you are willing to share that would be great! I am not artistic, but i do have an artist on standby to paint it on canvas in oil paints. Just need a draft to give them.

You might like to look at the images from Abraham Wald’s work on aircraft survivability from WW2

Just brainstorming… I’ve coached a few military oriented Lean Six Sigma projects and always had to chuckle regarding the value saved. Projects that redesign the system so armored tanks wouldn’t go missing… saved $200MM, etc. Perhaps your art could utilize pictures of large pieces of equipment that’s been found in some way… not sure. Good luck.

Hi Chris, I think this is a great thing you are doing and you sound like you would be an awesome buddy to work with. One idea I had was to paint out something to do with the difference that Six Sigma makes to Aircraft reliability. You could paint out an image that plots the distance that an aircraft can fly if its reliability and that distance was tied to each Sigma level.

So the image itself would be some kind of abstract expression to show the gain we get in distance as we go up the sigma levels, so in my head something like an aircraft silhouette at the scaled distance that a 1 sigma level flight would reach, then a silhouette at the distance that a 2 sigma level flight would reach, etc. I should get a chance later to make a sketch and do the math.

The scale of sigma performance levels is here: https://www.isixsigma.com/new-to-six-sigma/sigma-level/sigma-performance-levels-one-six-sigma/

For the math we could say that every mile of flight is a defect opportunity and scale the gap between the aircraft silhouettes accordingly.

@liamh Chris sounds like he has a great idea. Just a thought. It is art I am not sure how much I would worry about scale. It is more of a concept.

    Just my opinion.

Running the numbers we get these distances:

Sigma Level	DPMO	% of defects	Avg. Distance in Miles that first defect occurs
    1	690,000	69.00000%	1.449
    2	308,537	30.85370%	3.241
    3	66,807	6.68070%	14.968
    4	6,210	0.62100%	161.031
    5	233	0.02330%	4291.845
    6	3.4	0.00034%	294117.647

On a standard scale the first 4 are all very close together so thinking that Mike called it right, best to relax accuracy to scale or think of an Arty way to incorporate that. Attached is a chart showing this to scale.
