    I have to work on a scheduling project related to movement of ships accross the oceans from port to port delivering cargo. I was asked to see if we can apply Lean or LeanSigma to provide the most efficient and profitable and prioritization schedule. We are talking about 12 ships. Is lean or lean sigma applicable to such process? or is this a matter of purchasing a scheduling software and customizing it to this specific situation, please advise. Thank you.

    @ivan912 – It sounds like a scheduling issue. If you have some problems that need to be improved, then Lean and/or Six Sigma might be useful. If you want to deal with scheduling, you might look into Critical Chain if you have shared resources that are constrained.

    @ivan912
    Define the problem first. Consider the following format:

    During the last X months, our company/division had a problem, Y, with an average result of Z dollars impact for the process ABC.

    Fill in X, Y (the business pain), and Z (the estimated impact to the business). ABC is the process scope.

    Once you’ve begun to Define, you can use the Lean Six Sigma methodology to improve your process. Don’t forget to define a target to reduce the business pain, Y before you launch your team.

    Ravindra,
    Its about improving the current scheduling system and not about creating a brand new one. I have dug into it some more since my posting. I will just follow a DMAIC approach and try to narrow the scope in the Define Phase. It might morph into more than 1 project, remains to be seen. Anyone else worked on similar projects in scheduling, I certainly appreciate their input(s) here. Thank you and regards,

    @ivan912 I worked in shipping for a while, and although I didn’t get into scheduling much, I may have some ideas for you. Let me know if you’d like to talk.

    @Yvon – Thanks for the update. In my opinion purchasing scheduling software and customizing at this point of time will be too early to get to the solution. Since now we are clear that we will be doing DMAIC my suggestion would be to go by the methadology.Can suggest you different analysis that u can look at to start of,u need not to use very high funda statistical tool as of now, may be some basic can give u some quick fixes ( Low hanging fruits) then you can move a step ahead with in-depth statistical analysis. Am currently working in Shipping only & did something for scheduling & we are going by DMAIC approach. I may have something that can help you. Let me know if u would like to talk.
