My organization is looking to determine which quality improvement method (Lean, Six Sigma, Lean Sigma, etc…), is more applicable in a hospital setting.  Any advice?

    Thanks!

Lean is a good way to start. The results are quickly realized but not all. Only when you put those results to rigorous statistical analysis of six sigma will you be rid of most of the problems.
Looking at it another way, Lean is nothing but reduction of waste. Six Sigma also reduces waste but has much more of a statistical control of processes.

My advice:  Develop a Six Sigma DMAIC structure for team improvement and don’t limit yourself (pigeon-hole) into any one improvement tool/methodology.  We use the DMAIC structure and then use analysis and improvment methods from a variety of disciplines (lean, statistics, six sigma, constraint theory, etc.).  60% of our projects are throughput which are better suited for lean/waste reduction activity.  We still calculate DPMO and sigma levels based on customer goals for throughput – no matter if a lean tool was used or not.  I guess you could say we are doing Lean Six Sigma, but we haven’t worried about the “title”.
We chose this route by looing at our strategic needs, identified what type of projects we would be doing, then formulated our improvment plan around that.

    Hello Chad,
As Director of Process Improvement, and a Master Black Belt, here are my thoughts:
Choose what ever method you feel comfortable with, just don’t call it Lean, or six Sigma, just call it Process Improvement or Performance Improvement…something less threatening.  This is a journey..not a program.  I like the products from Channing l. Bete Co. the best. Very easy to use, and designed for healthcare. Call me for more. 773 880 3079. good luck. mark.

In our hospital system, we utilize Six Sigma.  Lean is one of the tools that we utilize to achieve our DPMO however it is defined by the project.
If you don’t use the name of the methodology that you employ, then how will you every get cultural intergration?  That said, sometimes we get into the project and begin using the terminology after we have seen some gains.  From this standpoint, you should do a stakeholder analysis.

Ours  is called Lean Six Sigma.  I agree the title should be used for organization integration. Sounds like you implement the same as we do.
