Problem :
A NEW COMPANY JUST STARTED ON HIGH STREET IN ACCRA, THE EXECUTIVES ARE DIVIDED, THE ISSUE IS;
SHOULD WE HAVE A MARKETING MANAGER? THE FINANCE DIRECTOR SAYS NO, BECAUSE THEY ARE “A FINANCIAL INSTITUTION, NOT A MANUFACTURER OF SCHOOL PROVISIONS”, THE MANAGING DIRECTOR SAYS, THEY SHOULD HAVE ONE, BECAUSE THEY “NEED TO SELL”. THE OPERATIONS DIRECTOR SAYS “WE DONT NEED SALES, WHAT WE NEED IS A GOOD SET OF FINANCIAL SERVICE PRODUCTS, AND THE PEOPLE WILL PATRONISE THEM”.
THE MATTER HAS BEEN REFERRED TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, AND HE HAS ASKED YOU TO ADVICE HIM.
COMMENT ON EACH OF THE QUOTES AND ADVICE THE CHAIRMAN; DO THEY NEED A MARKETING MANAGER?, AND WHY. HOW CAN THEY USE A MARKETING MANAGER TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS, SEEING THAT THEY ARE IN A VERY COMPETITIVE INDUSTRY.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough to be the best in a given field, yuou need to be able to get the word out to your potential Clients..0February 7, 2006 at 9:14 pm #133526Which class is this for, and is it graduate or undergrad level?
0February 7, 2006 at 9:19 pm #133527Yes, would be interested to know the class as well.
The answer is “Yes, they need a marketing manager” (the question is spun to force you to answer this way).
Marketing is more then just “advertising” remember the “P’s” of marketing???? Product, Price, Promotion, Place etc…?

You need one because most are dealing with a global market and it is where your revenue comes from.
Your leadership team needs to be replaced. The Financial Director is spewing tradition without regard to the business. Save the cost of his salary and buy some old books. The Managing Director doesn’t understand the difference between Marketing and sales. The Operations guy is naive – the Steve Jobs comment in Pirates of Silican Valley – yells at Gates “We’re better than you.” Gates “It doesn’t matter.”
Just my opinion.
Good luck0February 8, 2006 at 2:11 am #133533Mike:
Mike:The C-levels are asking the board.The board is asking Joseph.Joseph is asking the iSixSigma forum.This sounds like great leadership all around. My advice? Everyone should read http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0609610570/002-6237990-0131218?v=glance&n=283155
and just get the job done. I like this quoteDisciplines like strategy, leadership development, and
innovation are the sexier aspects of being at the helm of a successful
business; actually getting things done never seems quite as glamorous. Cheers, BTDT0 -
