    Hi there,
I am currently doing my post graduate MBA in the second semester. Right now, I am in the process to develop a proposal for my dissertation. As a MBB I have a preference to write my dissertation about Six Sigma. I would be very interessted and thankful to get in contact with people who would like to share their lessons learned about scope, theme, approach tip&tricks and whatever is value added for such a task.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Stefan

    Hi Stefan,
I agree, you should include six sigma in your dissertation.
From an advice point of you there is quite a bit, too much for an email but here goes…..
You will need to identify a research topic to develop your research strategy, design and data collection methods. There are some good books available to give you an introduction to research methods and I recommend. Bryman and Bell, 2003, Business Research Methods, Oxford University Press. It is important to know what your research topic is and what ‘academically’ acceptable research methodology options you have.
Once you have an idea of these factors you can carry out your literature review and there is quite a bit of text book material out there but not so much academic material. There is a new International Journal of Six Sigma which I think you will definitely need to read but apart from that you will have to rely on TQM based literature.
Once you have completed your literature review you will need to decide upon your research methodology based upon the research strategy: qualititative, quantitative or both;  your research design such as case study, ethnography, action research etc; and finally your data collection tools such as survey/questionnaire, interviews (structured, unstructured, semi-structured) etc. You will also need to cover the epistemology and ontology issues that relate back to your strategy, design and data collection methods. Are you a positivist? An epistemology position that advocates the methods of the natural science model to the study of social reality or are you an interpretict? The opposite to positivism and advocates the social scientist to grasp the subjective meaning of social action. There are other standpoints but for an MBA I don’t think it will be nessary to go too deeply into the philosophy.
Once you have completed your lit review and have your research plan mapped out it is time to go out and collect the data…I think you can take it from there.
I have written an MSc dissertation entitled ‘ Maintenance effects on process capability, improving overall equipment efficiency using a lean six sigma approach’. I got a distinction for the work and I am happy to share some of it with you.
    my email is [email protected]
    I hope this has helped.

    Hi Alex,
thanks for your reply. I am located in Germany. Currently I am supporting one of our european business units in deploying six sigma europeanwide with 30 BBs. Our program is running quite well after a very long and difficult start.
My aim is somehow to combine what I do in my day to day job with my dissertation. I thought about a case study. But…. there are so many interessting areas like project selection, link to lean, training aspects, etc. Any example or recommendation is highly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Stefan

    Paul,
thanks a lot for your reply. 2 weeks ago I had a course called research methods and most of your points ring a bell inside my head.
I guess I would prefer to do a case study linked to my daily job which is being a MBB for an automotive supplier.
My favourite topics are linked to Six Sigma and Lean in general. In particular I am very interested in project selection criterias, training content and the usage in projects, financial impact and validation of projects and there are a lot of interesting questions more coming from daily issues dealing with six sigma and lean. The theme of your dissertation sounds very interessting since half of the projects I support are fixed if the processes are in the condition they supposed to be. My difficulty is to understand how I can turn this kind of more practical problems and experience into a academic dissertation.Would be great to stay in touch and to learn about your experience.
    Thanks!
    Stefan

    Hi Stefan,
I have some ideas that may help you with the problem of  combining the practice with the academic elements of research.
Please email me on [email protected] so as we do not clog up this forum with our discussion.
    Best Regards
    Paul

    Stefan,
Before giving you ideas, can you specify what exactly are you doing and in which industry?
I think that I can send you some project info, but it will need some adjustment.
Send me details on: [email protected] and I will give you a more detailed info on the project.
    Regards,
    Alex

Hi stephan! It was interesting for me to read about your reseach area ans things you are interested in. Iam student of MS program ‘Quality Technology and Management’ in a swedish university and completed a black belt project at university as part of our six sigma training in course. Now, Iam getting ready to do my master thesis starting from this August and one of interesting area is six sigma project selection. It is because of my experience with my project and I think it is an important area for successful deployement in an organization. Iam in contact with few companies in gothenburg like SKF , Siemens to get focussed research question to work upon. While doing all this it will be interesting for me to know about more areas and discuss upon new possibilities. Please let me know if you need help regarding literature source etc. beacause I am into more academic now .
    Gud Luck!
