I’m interested in knowing how various companies are qualifying and educating MBB’s. Also will entertain new ideas. My company currently takes BB’s with >2 yrs experience and provides a two week training session geared to be more in-depth from a stats perspective. I know there isn’t a magic pill but any thoughts are appreciated.
0June 18, 2003 at 12:03 pm #87067What you describe isn’t too far from where we are however we add a few things to the mix and another week of training…. MBB’s for us form the basis of change managment therefore in addition to the review of methodology and advanced statistical material we added material on change management, project management, coaching and mentoring. Our MBB’s also develop new training material as well as deliver it therefore we add material on adult learning styles and training development.
With the additional material we also recognize that standing in front of a class of new BB’s is not a given therefore there is a requirement to deliver at least 3 training modules (2 must be technical in nature) which are evaluated by at least 2 other MBB’s. Finally, there is a comprehensive exam that is given after training and teaching (with both oral and written sections) which requires a passing score of 70% and a 90% to certify. (and no the written part is not a multiple guess test, but essay and short answer, minitab output analysis and data set analysis using minitab).
This qualifies the MBB to move from candidate to junior MBB status where they are assign to a more senior MBB for the first year of so of their tenure.
Not that any one way to get there is right but when we put someone in the role we are pretty sure they can handle the expectations for the position.0June 26, 2003 at 5:09 am #87381In a smaller company that is just starting Six Sigma with no MBB’s to mentor potential MBB’s what do you recommend? Who design’s the exam for certification?

0June 26, 2003 at 12:54 pm #87399Sorry, forgot the other part of the question… who? In my experience you need someone that is experienced in Six Sigma to be the first. That’s either buying the tallent from the outside or using a consultant to build it internally over time.
0June 26, 2003 at 6:51 pm #87431If you do not have the resources internally to train/certify BBs to be MBBs, is there a “preferred” training cirriculum or a MBB “certification” from ASQ?
0June 26, 2003 at 8:32 pm #87436Try SigmaPro. I went through their Master Black Belt certification course and it was great. In addition to advanced statistical tools, they covered strategic planning, Six Sigma deployment and project selection. Their number is (970 207-0077.

[email protected]0June 30, 2003 at 9:07 pm #87515One of the biggest phallacies at many companies is the manner in which an individual becomes an MBB. It is a good indication of the sophistication of their six sigma program.
1) Classroom advanced topic learning in statistics, interpersonal skills, project management ( 4-6 months)
2) Project work ( 10 + major project )
3) Proven Change Agents demonstrated skills.
Total training time 1year to 1.5 years additional training.0 -
