Any thoughts on carrying out a type 1 study before going onto conducting a type 2 R & R. Surely you need to establish gauge repeatability before going onto operator & gauge R & R. If type 2 fails you have to look at the gauge type 1 anyway ?

Not familiar with the Type 1 & 2 designations. I’m assuming (from your statement) that Type 1 is the repeatability component and Type 2 is reproducibility. Why would you separate the two when you can generate the data simultaneously? To establish repeatability, you have to make sure that your repeatability deficiencies are not with just one operator but with all. If one operator has repeatable results, what’s he doing right and the others wrong. I guess its just important to look at the components of the data and not just the final resultant. That’s why running a Gage R&R in MINITAB is so easy.

Conduct a full GR&R on Measurement System to understand the big picture. Use this data to establish any excessive vartiation in either repeatability or reproducibilty. Further to this, a type 1 may be beneficial to determine the element of the gauge that requires improvement. Re-verify with type 2 after improvements. Remember each element of DMAIC also has a dmaic.

What do yo mean by “each element of dmaic has a dmaic”?

Basically, you have the 5 elements of deployment called Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. What I’m saying is the each of these elements is also made up of a kind of mini DMAIC eg. For my measurement system I have had to define it, measure it (incl MSA), analyse results. Having found that my measurement system was not robust, I now have to develop a new measurment system, which will involve DOE, which will now incorporate the Analyse/Improve phase of DMAIC. By repeating the MSA successfully at periodic intervals, this forms the Control phase.
    I hope that this clarifies.
