I was working on the Crossword puzzle yesterday and came across a clue ‘Part of 3M ____ Waste’ answer to which was ‘MUDA’. Could anybody explain to me what is this MUDA Waste concept and how is this related to 3M

‘Muda’ is originally from Japanese, meaning waste—3M did not invent it. Another word you see often is Kaizen which is also from Japanese, meaning ‘continuous improvement’. Chinese also say ‘Kaizen’ when referring continuous improvement. I believe the Japanese borrowed this word from the Chinese but the Japanese made it popular. More specifically, Toyota made it popular. Hope this helps.

    Thanks Steve.
If MUDA means waste, then why is it called MUDA Waste and how is it part of 3M, as written in the crossword clue.

    Nitin,
To call something Muda Waste seems to be a little redundant, doesn’t it?  I do not know the answer to the 2nd question. I am only sure that 3M did NOT invent the word Muda.

    Hello,
3M – INCLUDES:  MUDA, MURA and Muri.
Following is reproduced from a website on this:
    Quote:
Kaizen is a Japanese concept that includes total quality control, continuous process improvement, error-free production, and just-in-time delivery. Kaizen targets the “Three Evil M?s,” muda, mura and muri. Muda is the Japanese word for waste, for not adding value; muda is seen as the biggest threat to being competitive. Mura is the inconsistent or irregular use of a person or machine; while muri is the act of placing excessive demands on workers or production equipment.
    Unquote:
So the question — Part of 3M , — Waste  clearly refers to MUDA.
Hope you will find the above in order.
I would like to get an overall feedback on this Crossword puzzle.

    3M Consist of
           Muri, means something heavy
           Mura, means something unbalance
           Muda, means something “No benefit”

Hope can help you to distinguish three of the 3M.
