I joined a new company 2.5 weeks before. I was given two projects. One is implementing SPC which is going pretty slow as we are still seeing the demos and trying to pick which is good software. I compared different softwares in a magazine and scheduled the demos. This took me a week which also includes some training by other employees so that I can learn more about the processes here.
From last 1.5 week am idle. The second project I got is analyzing some data which they did not start collecting. I was told by one team mate that it will be starting in jan. My boss’s mother died so he was not in office for a long time. Today he has come and when i asked for more work he says concentrate on second project..go and see how to collect the data etc…but all that is predefined i guess. I find nothing going to the floor reg this second project…
Even for first project the definition of the requirements of the software was so bad. I had hard time selecting the softwares. The main problem here am facing is the projects are not at being explained to me. My boss says we got to organize the project definitions. Thats all..what am i supposed to do??? Even now am sitting idle…………
    Thanks!

Show some initiative for Pete’s sake.  Go and collect some data.  Create a control chart in Excel and do some work!

My advice is to spend more time choosing software, spend more time being idle, learn more about six sigma … this is the way you can best help your competitors.

    Harathi,
Regarding the analysi of the data, why not log onto minitab web site and download the 30 day demo, its free. At least you will be able to show some graphical summaries, etc. THE DEMO HAS A FULL HELP SECTION THAT CAN TEACH YOU. I would also as stated start collecting some real time data and feed that into mini tab too.
Regarding the spc, it is important to assess the capability, if you just start implementing xbar charts that are worthless, so again use the mini tab to establish capability of some processes, you will then be in a position to speak with data and try and correct the processes prior to spc implementation.
Hope everything goes well for you.

    Hi all,
Thanks for the replies! We already have jump and I have my own copy of minitab. We are trying to find a software that would get the charts from databases on real time basis for the operators. Currently using historian and jump which are more like post analysis.
Its hard for me to go and collect the data as already we are scrapping hell a lot of our product for the inspection purposes. But with your advise, I feel I should probably make a dummie project in one of the softwares and show them how the data & charts would look like.
I have a question though. OTIF should include the date when we promised for our product to be at the door of our customer right? Not when we are shipping out of our door.
Also, I do not think it is a good idea to combine cpk’s of different processes. Please share what you think.
    Thanks again!

Dave’s advice is very poor.  It’s like giving a machine gun to a 5 year old.
First you should learn the basics.
Start by reading Deming “Out of the Crisis”

    Phil,
Regarding my post, taking out what the poster said about the scrap, why is assessing capability incorrect on ket processes and then putting them back in control before introducing control charts.

You cannot determine if a process is in control without using control charts !
