I am looking for the effects of 3 different grazing practices on the bulk density.
12 similar tracts of land, each containing the type of soil under investigation, were randomly assignmented, four to each grazing practice. After 12 weeks, we measured the bulk density of six randomly selected core samples from each tract and calculated the average density for each set.
    Question:
What common sample size (ie number of tracts per treatment) is required in order that, if the true mean bulk densities for the three treatments were 1.75, 1.70 and 1.65 g/cm3 respectively, the analysis of variance F test at the 0.05 significance level would have 80%? and 90%?
How do i go about attempting that question with the Minitab’s power and sample size module?
In addition, How would the question be attempted if 12 core samples instead of 6 were taken from each tract and averaged?

    Thanks in advance

    Sandy

    Sandy,
Is this for the beef, dairy, equine or other industry?

And if you are new to this forum, let me introduce you to Stan the Man.  He is a guy with such mathematical and deep analysis acumen that he lurks ever so candidly in this forum just to find a chance to snap at people, shaking his head wondering why he is the only enlightened being in the planet, and hoping that maybe, just maybe, one day a shrine will be constructed in his honor for every Black Belt to have a place to worship him and burn aromatic incense while chanting.  If you are lucky enough to receive an advice from Stan (angelic choir singing in the background), be sure to gold plate his response so that you have objective evidence that you are worthy.
