Hi. I am a MBA student currently doing a research paper on Six Sigma. Would like to get your advise one the following scenarios:
3M has a $1 billion budget and 7000 employees. The management recently launched a series of process improvement activities and also itnroduced a black belt program with the intention of digging out any inefficiensy in the system. If you are a black belt , what would you look for?
Please help. I dun really know what the question wants. I have roughly define my outline using the DMAIC concept but i still feel there is more to it.

In some ways, this isn’t a particularly good example because 3M is a company with thousands of products.
DMAIC is a five step process, but there is a project selection process that should go on before Define.  Given your problem, job #1 has to be finding a particular area of focus.
The thing to do is to try to identify the “pain points”.  These might be products with a large number of returns, or a lot of customer complaints.  The place to go looking first is where the returns are costly, or perhaps where we thing the complaints are causing loss of market share. Although we mostly talk about statistics, Six Sigma is all about following the money.
Let’s suppose that returns of a particular type of tape are costing us, and customers tell us the tape isn’t sticky enough.  We study the returned tape and discover that we are shipping tape with a wide range of stickiness, let’s assume we have an XYZ test, and tape near the middle of the range never gets returned.
So looking at the history of our product and the returns we think we can all but eliminate the returns if we just make the tape more uniformly sticky.  So in Define, we agree we are going to try to reduce the variation in stickiness for this product.
Now, in Measure, we will understand just how good test XYZ is, and come up with a target standard deviation for XYZ results.  At the end of Measure, we want to get everyone’s agreement that we will be successful if we reduce the standard deviation of the stickiness as measured by test XYZ to, say, 10 or less.
In Analyze, we then understand what affects the stickiness.  If the XYZ result is our ‘Y’, we think Y=f(x), and we try to understand the x’s that we can control, and develop an understanding of the relationships.
In Improve, we figure out how to affect the target x (or x’s).  Let’s say that the temperature at which the adhesive is applied seems to be a key factor.  We might try keeping very close tabs on that temperature in a pilot, before deciding that we need to put an automatic controller on that temperature rather than just having the operator adjust a steam valve.
Finally, in control, we will put in place a series of procedures to ensure that we keep the temperature of the applied adhesive close enough to the target we have defined to keep the XYZ test results within the required range.
Although selecting the project comes before the “process”, it really is a series of steps just narrowing down the space.  First we select what we are going to try to affect, then we understand just specifically what our target is, then we understand what are the controlling variables and where do they need to be, then we decide which variable to go after and develop its target, and finally we give the plan a tool to keep it in control.
Is this the kind of thinking you were looking for?

    Hi Mcd
Thanx for ur help. The truth is i dun really know what the professor is expecting. He is giving us a six sigma assignment for a Human Resource Paper. I agree with you that i have to actually identify the “pain point”. I did some research on 3M and i have decided to use the example of reducing the sales cycle time for my assignment. But the thing is i cant seem to find anything for the analyse stage.
    Please help. Thanx again

More McD……much less Stan, Darth and just my opinion, buy my book Carnell.  Finally, someone who helps rather than insults others.  Guess McD is a down to earth guy without the over inflated ego of the other wanna be’s.

    hello everyone!!
i am a mba-it student on a internship program, working in an IT firm.im working in applying six sigma to software projects.i need help regarding how to begin ?,wht should be my strategic plans?,which aspects should be my key factors? im supposed to analyze the projects on the basis of 1). schedule time,2).defect eliminating.
pls do provide me help,so that i can complete my project successfully.
    regards

Look if you r talking about the strategic plan i.e. how can any company go for six sigma methodology at strategic level and this has been ask by those top line cream, then dear I must say they are asking for a moon from u.
u can analyze the project as per schedule , defect, effort, size .
For that you have to analyze the s/w metric
    a)    Effort analysis
    b)    Schedule variance
    c)     Size estimation
    d)    Defect density
    e)    Cost of quality
of various process and then find Bottle neck in that so that u further take those area as six-sigma improvement project.
But when we talk about six sigma project at strategic level few point we have take in consideration
    1)    what is business relevance of taking the project
    2)    monetary benefits
    3)    how this project fulfilling company vision and objective
    4)    where this improvement going to impact in ours business growth line
    5)    Addressing customer need
u can go for cycle time reduction also,
S/W is an transitional process, so u have to follow TQSS (transitional quality for SIX SIGMA) , these are the question which has to be address by top level management .

Six Sigma can be widely applied to software.  There isn’t a real simple answer to your question.  There is a Software forum a little more focused on that topic, but if you use the search bar, you will find this site has many articles on Six Sigma for software that will likely give you a number of ideas.
Always keep in mind the objectives of each step in the Six Sigma process, and don’t get hung up on the tools.  The magic isn’t in control charts or anova.  It’s in focusing on the problem, using data to make decisions, and being very explicit about them.  From this perspective, software is no different than any other process.

    Anurag Sir.
Thankyou for giving me a direction to my project.
Sir i would like to know that should i go for analyzing the s/w metric as given by you for projects of same relevance or all projects done in the past.how many of them?
How am i supposed to prepare my documentation?
please do kindly reply me on  [email protected].
    Thankyou.
    Regards
    Anuradha.
