There’s a good description for the null and alternate hypothisis available on this website that might help provide you with some insight. Just look for both of the terms in the “dictionary” section.

OK Caribou Breath, here goes. The word null means absence of, nothingness and all other forms of the negative. Thus a null hypothesis is written in the form of nothingness. Ex: no change, no difference, no slope, no relationship, no correlation, etc.. The exact form depends on your research problem and likely the hypothesis test that you are using. The alternate can be written in three forms: not equal to, greater than or less than something.Based on your p value and alpha you either reject the null and are stuck with the alternate or you fail to reject the null and have to keep it since you didn’t have enough evidence to reject it.Now, here is the tricky part. You can fail to reject for two reasons. First, the null “speaks the truth” and there is no difference. Or, the power of your test is insufficient to see any difference and therefore you fail to reject. Increasing your sample size will take care of the power issue. If power is sufficient (.8-.9) then failing to reject the null seems to be the way to go.
