whether expressing OEE in sigma level makes any sense?

I’m not quite sure what you’re asking since sigma level is derived from DPMO while OEE includes other productivity factors including equipment availability and speed. Can you clarify?

IMO, an advantage in using sigma levels is in comparing unlike processes–if you’re in that situation, converting the %OEE to Sigma level makes sense (you can even include the shift because your performance might well fall back). If your organization uses the “3-sigma rule” for setting improvement targets, you must also convert…

Other than that, my only advice would be to use a Lost Efficiency number (1-OEE) to focus people on the defect or opportunity for improvement.

    Keep improving!

@ash4010 OEE may be useful to you if you are maybe comparing different plants but as an operations number it is for the most part nonsense. This is one of those things where a manager says “I just want to be able to tell how I am doing from one number.” If you have a manager who can’t comprehend 3 numbers then you have the wrong manager. If you can’t explain this to them and get them to drop this ridiculous metric then do not convolute it any further by reporting it in sigma.

Take a look at Strayers response and think about the concept of DPMO, why you do it and how are you going to get the proper weighting (opportunity count)between your 3 factors.

OEE is a good concept and I’d not mess it up by trying to convert to some sigma level number.
