0November 19, 2006 at 1:53 am #61208I’m trying to improve the start time for the first cases for OR in our hospital. A lot of systems are manual. There is internal and external causes of delay with lab-tests, X-rays, consent forms…etc. My focus is the internal fix, first. Few things…we can not change the current layout, and a lot of pre assessment (preoperative test) is done at two locations, accross the street form one another.
Thanks
0November 20, 2006 at 2:08 pm #61209We had the same preop assessment issue and localized it – saved about $600k in reduced cancelled surgeries.
We closed our inventory system (we use Pyxis) – costs some dollars to implement, but reduced supply cost per surgery by about 18% – will pay for the system in less than 18 months.
We are working on first surgery time, but we really don’t have a huge issue there. We are finding that actualy the second and third scheduled surgeries are the trouble spots. We are working on a better way to pre-set carts for the next surgery to reduce supply wait time, we have a coordination schedule with environmental so they can plan their room cleans, and we have implemented a Manager position for the business side of surgery top oversee the issues, if any. We are also working on handoff between surgery-PACU-unit. Found we had a short wait time after surgery, causing a need to have a longer break between events.0November 21, 2006 at 2:53 pm #61214Did you do a VSM?
As for the pre-op/scheduling improvements how did you localize it? Is there a time line that is followed per each pre-op test complition? A cutt off time for the day before, pehaps?
Let me know
Thanks
