    Can the tuning of a PID loop be considered a DOE?

    Dean,
    I suppose you could set it up as a DOE (3 factor, 2 Levels) with output as your response… 
    The question I would ask myself would be why would you want to use a DOE instead of the specialized tuning software that is commonly available?

    Sure, just about anything with more that one input variable is a candidate for DOE, so tuning a PID would qualify.
    I’d probably suggest a response surface with 5 variables: the three constants for P,I, &D, the set point, and the load (perhaps others that apply to your situation).  The response would be the time to achieve a steady value within acceptable margins.
