This is our first project. We have created a laundry list of all pain areas or issues (cross – functional by meeting with Functional heads). The issue facing us now is how to priortise & identify the project to be taken. Is there a best way to do it such that it can help us justify the project taken to the functional heads. Thanks in advance

create a matrix similar to the cause and effects matrix with your projects listed down the side and business requirements accross the top, weighted for improtance. Then score each project against these criteria.Β  Remember you will need a mixed group to score the projects to get a balanced view.Β  You will then have a clear idea of which projects are likely to give you the biggest business gains and have something to show to the senior management to show that you have gone through a robust process to select your projects.

I just supplement with what Jule has recommended.
List out all your pain areas.
Against each issue let the cross functional team allot points on a scale of 1 to 5 depending upon the impact each has on the business bottomline. more the impact more the points. Again allot points depending upon the ease with which the project can be carried out/implemented/cost involved for- implementation. more it is easier more the points. Multiply the two marks(points) for each issue. Select the issue/issues whichΒ scores maximum points.
    Cheers,
    Aru

I have done similar to the matrix description described.Β  We break down our ratings into the 4 balanced scorecard categories – financial impact, business performance (efficiency/utilization/etc), customer satisfaction, and employee development.Β  Each project gets an aggregate rating based on these and are weighted based on the strategic goals of the business (compares to Jues’ matrix top row).
This also provides an individual rating for projetcs done via the balanced scorecard, not just an aggregate score.Β  It allows us to see how much effort is spent in the 4 areas.
