Should we consider replacing SOPs with process maps as PMs are visual and more easily readable?

    Rick-
I have always looked at this in terms of the policy, procedures, work instructions.  The SOP’s are procedures and typically written at a level of detail which do not get into the task details.  With this, I find that having a process map (either process flow or functional deployment/swim lane) work well as an appendix or even a cover page to the SOP.  I would never replace on with another as they are complimentary to each other.
The work instructions which get into more detail would then also have a more detailed process map.

    Good Luck

There perhaps is a best of both worlds if a suitable tool is used to capture and display the SOP. IE. One can provide a high level overview of the SOP in a process map and behind this may lie the task details. ie. Capture and display it all in one place but pick a view that suits the angle the user is coming from. eg.

    Hope this helps.

For my case, we apply SOP attached with a simple story board as appendix. It is something like what they call “kamishibai” in Lean manufacturing.
a “kamishibai” will include the SOP itself, and the common problems which we extracted from FMEA,It also have a space for the user to note down the occasions when the actual operation is vary from the indications on SOP.
this design has consideration for the management to audit the effectiveness on current SOP.

Attaching FMEA results and exceptions to the SOP……….I find that quite innovative………has it helped?
