My organization is deployment Six Sigma projects for more than one year now.  The number of active project hits 30 now.  This year will add another 30 to 40 projects.  Tracking of the indivdual project status as well as the consolidation of project data e.g. metrics, costs and benefits, poses a real challenge to us.  Currently, we use Micrsoft Excel spreadsheets for tracking and reporting projects.  We are now looking for a project portfolio management solution with database management functions that are specific for Six Sigma projects.  I would like to know from other practitioners which are the commonly used off-the-shelf packged solutions in the market.

Niku had a nice package like that. They have since been bought up by CA.  I think the package is now called Clarify or something like that.  I seem to recall they had some nice templates for Six Sigma program tracking.
Their project management, though, is a little different than MS Project.  It is better suited to large, relatively mature (in the CMM sense) shops.  It isn’t especially appealing to the lone ranger wanting to scope out a project and then ignore the plan (which seems to be the practice in our industry).
I think Microsoft has something similar on their server-based version of Project (sorry, I don’t know what the name of the week is).
Be advised, though, that implementing any sort of package like that is a pretty large effort if it is going to do you any good.  You will likely need to tailor your processes or the package or both.
Any of these products is going to be expensive, but the implementation cost is going to make the software look free.  Be prepared to swallow hard.  On the other hand, the bennies can be huge.

We use ProjX from BMG.  Other systems include Instantis and SixNet.

As your deployment gains more traction, you will find it difficult to use spreadsheets.   At my company, we built an internal system but eventually recognized that we could not easily implement it enterprise-wide. Consequently, we used a cross-divisional team to develop the criteria for evaluating Six Sigma project tracking systems.

Based on our requirements, we identified three companies and ultimately decided to use PowerSteering because their system was customizable and flexible to meet our current and future needs.

Remember, no two Six Sigma implementations are the same; therefore, I recommend that you decide on a system that can to more than track projects.

    Greg,
I am looking at Enterprise Track by Instantis.  My company wants to buy something that can be used for all project types, not just Six Sigma.  Any feeback about ease of customization, permissions, etc. would be helpful.
    Thanks
