I have been selected to be a Team Leader and was told the project would stick to the DMAIC cycle in executing the process.  Does anyone have any advise on what I can do to prepare for this new role?  I will be getting a two hour internal training session but,  I would like to get a better feel for what is expected of the project manager’s role. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A project manager plays many roles.  Hopefully, the training session will orient you to the company’s expectations as a manager.  As a new team leader, assure that the project is well defined.  Seek out a mentor to aid you with both the project charter and the organization’s history, needs, and some plain “people-advise.”  Use this person as a sounding board for ideas, data gathering plans, and the statistical analyses.  Communication is so important that you should always consider what is being provided, why, and how it will be received, in all directions.  In addition, I recommend that you schedule regular reviews with the project champion to keep on the same page.  Do it even when you think there is nothing to say.  Gather your team and ask for their membership, help and support.  Don’t try to do everything yourself, because you can’t!  Good luck, and refer to the basic questions of the DMAIC.  It will lead you when stuck in the mud.  -Gregg

    Hi,
Congratulations for your new role and also for your future assignments. From my point of view first you study the process (if it is a running project).Though you can learn from the training, practical plays an important role.Follow some best practices.Just see how your previous peers performed the role so as to get the practicability of the inputs regarding the projects. You just track yourself so as to know where you are.     If you proceed with this you can evaluate yourself for PM role.
