For BBs and MBBs with project mentoring experience —
I’m wondering what you feel are the advantages / disadvantages of mentoring other GB/BB projects remotely vs. face to face (travel, etc)?  How much do you mentor remote vs. travel for face to face?  Is remote more / less effective?  Why?

I am in this situation at the moment. Of my green belts, 12 are in NY (where I live), 10 a 2.5 hour drive away, and 3 are a plane ride away.I find that project progress is more correlated to frequency of contact/coaching than the medium.I do find that being on-site with the belt is very helpful to me – I always want to be in the gemba wherever possible.

Face to face is always going to be better for so many reasons (see the process, see their data, show how you are there to help them, etc). Remote works as long as you’ve developed a relationship and established some credibility. Frequency is important (at least weekly) whether remote or f2f.
I make use of on-line meeting tools like gotomeeting that make it much easier to discuss data, presos, etc. Also a nice way to show the belt what notes your taking on a feedback form.

Mentoring is mentoring. The act of helping someone through their projects work. While a face to face is an most cases easier to read the other party. There is nothing wrong with a telephone /computer inteerface situation.
frerquency and quality of the interaction is what is important.

I mentor alot of folks outside of my location.  I use tools such as Netmeeting to assist with sharing files when needed.  The key is to insure they have a face to face Project Champion who is actively participating and reveiwing their project on an ongoing basis.

In many cases over the years I found that early in the game it paid dividends to meet face to face to develop solid relationship and TRUST. Then as the work is progressing you can phase out face to face and necesary travel and operate remotely. Then again..each person, team, organization or even project team is different.
