Dear All,
I am currently writing a Thesis and I am looking for any published case studies using the Shainin system.
I have already found “The hunt for the Red X: A case study in the use of Shainin Design of Experiment in an industrial honing operation. (Goodman and Wyle, 2001)
I am also aware of “The case of the incapable lathe” written by Shainin himself.
Are there any others out there?
Thanks for reading.0April 26, 2004 at 2:53 pm #99111Paul,
“Experimental Technique for Resist Process Evaluation,” by Mark Hiatt and Andy Urquhart, Semiconductor International, May 1987.
This work was loosely based on the ‘so-called’ Shainin Tools and was undertaken when Motorola set up a World Class photolithography room in MOS 3, in Austin, in 1984/5. It created a lot of interest because for the first time a photo process ran without test wafers, and according to Bill Dunnigan it reduced cycle time from 7x theortetical to 1X. It also achieved a Cpk = 2, which in those days meant that the tolerances were +/- six sigma instead of +/- three sigma.
A feature of our approach was to emphasize ‘blocking of data’ to reduce the effects of noise. This was later recognised by Prof. Bohr when he reviewed our paper. (See a previous posting …) This approach turns out to be quite similar to the Taguchi Method, which we were unaware of at the time.
I sent a copy of our article to Dorian, but he didn’t reply, although I later noticed that he used our chart in one of his publications. Of course, much of Shainin’s contributions have been negated by the modern PC and software.
Many more ‘Shaininesque’ projects were ran in Phoenix prior to 1984, when Ted Williams first invited Shainin to Phoenix; but I don’t have any details other than reports that his Pre-control ‘magnetic flag’ method did not work well.
Regards,

Many thanks for the quick reply, I will try to obtain a copy of your article.
Cheers,

Has any one worked on reducing Grinding and Honing process time reduction. Our process time is @ 10sec/piece. Please suggest the parameters to look for and improve and also share your methodology/experience.
thanks in advance

Do you have a journal/book citation to go with the authors? I can tell you I have never seen a side-by-side comparison of Shanin methods and comparable statistical techniques. I would be particularly interested in an assessment of multivariate methods. I’ve checked a number of the indexes for various statistical journals (Technometrics, JASA, etc.) and found nothing. If you should find anything I’d appreciate it if you would post the citation to this forum.0October 5, 2004 at 12:24 pm #108553

be notified via email.Search from ASQ website for shainin related articles if you are ASQ member. I found more than 20 papers of Shainin in the ASQ database. Yep, I am also doing some research on Shanin method.
0October 8, 2004 at 12:37 pm #108737Mr Dog: I am not a memebr of the ASQ so I don’t have access to their resources.
Mr Carlos: Here is a list of some case studies and research papers I have identified. There are more, if these are interesting to you I can give you more.Antony, J. and Cheng, A.H.Y.

1993

Mr. Butler: the only side by side comparison I know of is by de Mast titled “A methodical comparison of 3 strategies for quality improvement” there is another “Comparison of selected quality improvement methodologies: Shainin, Taguchi and Classical” by Bill Ross. I contacted the author for more details but never got a reply.0October 11, 2004 at 8:23 am #108838
