Has anyone developed a basic aptitude test to screen applicants for the position of quality engineer?  Specifically, we are screening QE candidates for our China manufacturing facility and I am interested if anyone has developed or seen a tool like this.  Thank you.

ISSSP has one, but it may be overkill for your purposes. It is also a bit pricey, if I remember right. Check their website for details.

Certifications such as those from American Society for Quality are an indicator of aptitude.  I’m not aware of any equivalent Chinese QE certs but I do know that ASQ recently partnered with Wuhan University and has other presence in China.  This press release may help you with research http://www.asq.org/media-room/press-releases/2009/20090720-wuhan-university.html

The ASQ test has been called “a mile wide and an inch deep,” because it has to cover such a broad range of topics for all industries. I cannot comment on the ISSSP test, but in my experience it is rare to come across an “aptitude” test that will meet your needs. Technical aptitude is what we would call “necessary but insufficient.”You should pursue tests of people’s personality traits, because anybody with a decent technical background can pick the needed technical skills – but not everybody has the temperament to handle the diverse demands of the job.I could direct you toward some resources that might be useful to you in that regard (I won’t see a nickel of this, so it’s NOT a plug for business for me).
