    Hi All,
Please help me in selecting rows of information in excel as sample data for data analysis. Would appreciate if anyone can provide the steps for getting  the information through microsoft excel.
    Thanks & Regards,

Don’t know Excel well but real easy in Minitab if you have it.

If you have the ‘Analysis Toolpak’ installed go:
    Tools > Data Analysis…
then select “Sampling” from the dialog box and you will get the dialog box for the random sampling funtion.

Faceman,That was too simple :-)I was about to grind through something like
    * insert a column of random numbers
    * select all the data
    * sort by the random number
    * select enough rows for that sample you want
    * copy & paste to a new worksheetBut that whole process is already built in to Excel. Cool. Its amazing what some of the software will do if you only know how!

Of course it isn’t that simple.  If you read the original post, I interpreted it as wanting to select random rows.  The data analysis function you described has Excel randomly selecting from columns and creating a sample.  In Minitab, you can randomly select a row and take all the row information with you.  If that is what he wants, then the excel function you gave doesn’t seem to do that.  Please verify.

You’re right Darth, my bad.  I think the poster wants to get the whole row.
I would use minitab also.  But if somebody can’t pony up the $$$ for Minitab I would do this in excel:
    1) Use a column

Sorry accidentally submitted, let me start over:
You’re right Darth, my bad.  The poster wants to get the whole row.
I would use minitab also.  But if somebody can’t pony up the $$$ for Minitab I would do this in excel:
    1) Do the Tools > Data Analysis, Sampling on a column of unique values if it exists (create a column of 1 through whatever using drag down copy if a column of unique values doesn’t exist).
    2) Use the Data>Filter>Advanced filter function with the original table as the input range and the output step one as the criteria range.  Don’t forget that you need column headers for this to work.  The column headers for the two columns have to be the same.
    3) Figure out where I am going to get the $$$ to buy minitab so I don’t have to go through this again.
I have no relationship with minitab, it just samples rows quite easily.

When people fill out spreadsheets in Excel, they usually use a row format such that each row contains all the information relative to a customer or some other entity.  By random sampling the entire row and all its contents and putting it in a separate worksheet, the analyst can utilize all the data for that randomly selected customer number, file number, etc.  That won’t work with using columns.  Easy to do in Minitab.  I imagine there is a way in Excel but I don’t have that expertise nor desire since Mini is so easily available.  Heck, you can download it for 30 days so there is no excuse for somebody not having it, at least for a month.

Hey and you can roll back the date on your computer every 29 days and it’ll be good forever. It’s what I do.

For real?  Does that mess up any other internal functioning of the computer or any other programs?  For me, I just find friends who have copies……forget I said that…only kidding.  I use my calculator and slide rule.

Using the output of ‘sampling’ as the input for ‘Advanced filter’ will randomly select rows of data in the format that you described.
I already have MT and like it.  Just trying to help out a poster who apparently doesn’t have it.

Actually you can’t do that anymore on the latest version, Minitab 14. It renders itself unusable if you try to even change the date at any point during the 30 dey period trial.

I would bet that you can do something with regedit to make it work.  Hypothetically speaking ofcourse.  I have never, nor will I ever use the regedit utility for this or similar purposes.

Or we find a student or consultant friend that can get it for you at a reduced price.

If you do not see Data analysis under Tools in Excel, click on Add-ins, put a chck mark on all the menu items and voila! you got it. You have a wonderful set of set of tools including ANOVA If it is not enough, download Anlyse-it with excel.

If you are a consultant who helps clients learn to use Minitab, they will arrange for you to have a copy at no cost. No sense trying to beat the system if the system’s working with you…

    Ok Stan,
Quit causing trouble.  You know that you can get Minitab by giving me a call.
    Jeff O
PS –  This will mess up your trial version of Minitab if you try to extend the trial this way.  Give Minitab a call if you need to extend your evaluation.

Just seeing if you were paying attention. ;-).
To all who know my behavior – the rolling back the date was a joke!!
Jeff O. is also a very good resource to the Six Sigma community to all of you who don’t know him and you can always trust his answers (unlike mine – trust mine except when I am ruthlessly helping someone)
Hey, I do think it would be worth it in lost revenue to Minitab to have entire companies with the wrong date on their computers. What do you thnk?
