I am a student researching six sigma for my graduate project.  I am trying to locate historical data on six sigma but am having difficulty.  I am trying to find for instance I am trying to find out how many companies use six sigma, how many people take classes and are certified each year, etc .  Does anyone have suggestions on where to find this information?

You’ve probably discovered by now that no one really “owns” six sigma and that there is no single certifying body.  Most large companies that have adopted six sigma have internal training and certification programs.  You might be able to get some historical information from the originators and early adopters such as Motorola, AlliedSignal (which took the Honeywell name after acquiring Honeywell), and GE.  But getting a handle on the current state of adoption is beyond the resources of any individual researcher.

In addition, a lot of companies consider their Six Sigma program part of their “competitive advantage”, and only release very limited information.
