Hi All,
My boss is asking for a roadmap to be defined for a new organizational structure that we are implementing. When he says “ROADMAP” what exactly is he looking for? I think I have a idea but then I am doubting myself
Please advise
Thanks

Roadmap should tell how to get from Point A to Point B. Or, how to implement an initiative from start to finish. There may be many variations to this. Some look like a roadmap, consisting of several streets, some are similar to a project plan. I hope it helps.

Thanks – I am trying to do a roadmap for a new organizational structure that we are working towards. Can you help me some high level points that would fit into the roadmap?

Well, you must first specify the future organization structure, and establish a baseline of the current organizational structure. Then, you must see the gap or how much change needed to move from the current to the future organizational structure.
Then, develop a plan, i.e, the roadmap to get from the current structure to the future structure that corresponds to some business objectives.
BTW: What does your company do?

I think you need to overcome fear and ask the boss to explain – what exactly is he needed? Som may thing it will not be a smart thing to show our own ignorance, but I will say that it will be ‘foolish’ to assume what the other may mean when he /she says soemthing.
So ‘ Don’t assume things…seek clarifications …when in doubt’. Thats ur first lesson!

“If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?” Sandy Ringer
Here are some questions that you may want to ask:
1. Where are we now? What is happening now?
2. Where do we want to go? What do we want to happen? What should be happening? Vision!
3. How do we get there? Mission!
4. When do we want to arrive? Are S.M.A.R.T. Goals in place? Milestones!
5. Who will get us there? Has a team been defined? Who will accomplish the roadmap? or Am I the only member?
6. What will it cost? Time, money, resources (Project plan)!
7. How do we measure results? What is the expectation?
8. Will your boss or his/her boss, etc. have skin ‘n’ the game! Meaning, are they going to be stakeholders in seeing you succeed. What is their vested interest?
9. Most important questions: Why? Why are we doing this? Who? Who is my customer? Do I really understand what they want or is it my perception of what I think they want? Big difference!
