Anecdotal example: a manufacturer of large kitchen appliances was designing its distribution network. Their initial assumption was that they needed to deliver within 24 hours of the order, but research indicated that 72 hours was acceptable in most instances. The difference vastly reduced the cost of carrying and handling all the extra inventory.Hope this helps.0September 6, 2005 at 9:55 pm #126427The relationship between 6 sigma and marketing is very interesting and it is growing pretty fast. I have experience in both and am working in a methodology that will act as a bridge between two very different fields.
The first thing is that marketing is not process oriented, so unless you change your structure to a process based marketing, any step towards implementing 6 sigma will be a waste of your time.

Take a look at a tool called conjoint analysis. It has been a marketing tools that has been in place for years. If you understand the application of conjoint analysis in the marketing environment then understanding the application of Six Sigma is relatively easy (from a project perspective).
In terms of a deployment strategy Marketing is no different than any other department.
Just my opinion.
Good luck.0May 8, 2006 at 10:15 pm #137419Can some one tell me what is the job description, and responsibilities of Marketing Manager.

I’m asking you this because I’m a leader of 6 sigma on a marketing company and the answer to this question makes all difference . . .
Sorry for answering your question with another one, but we can tell you loads of things without any pratical approach for you.

Henrique0May 22, 2006 at 7:16 pm #137923Marketing plays a vital role in six sigma because it has the initial touchpoint with the customer. One of the critical aspects of Six Sigma is Customer needs, QFD, among others. With the vital information coming from marketing, the customer needs will be properly defined and further be used in CTQs, QFD, among others

Our company has recently implemented a “process” for market development in order to achieve growth of our Market Share in new markets, existing markets, new products, etc. We are seeking to incorporate a Dashboard Metric to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of our market process. Does your company utilize any Six Sigma methodology for metrics? Barb0February 12, 2007 at 4:57 am #151855What is actually then role of marketing manager?

0December 10, 2007 at 3:21 pm #165948Sushant:I see two questions you are really posing. The first: “The role and responsibility of marketing manager in implementing six sigma.” IMHO, the marketing function needs to identify and communicate marketing objectives and strategies so other parts of the organization, including six-sigma, can align and contribute to these. Too often six-sigma is called in to be a substitute for professional marketing work, and it is not a good substitute IMHO. If your marketing function is not functioning, fix that first using principles of marketing excellence. The American Marketing Association can be a good source for that information. The second question: “how can the steps of six sigma be related to the 4 P’s…and various matrices of marketing..” Of the 4-P’s (Product, Price, Place and Promotion) I have seen six-sigma more effectively applied to Product (development and execution) and Place (distribution) than Pricing and Promotion, though I am sure there are exceptions to this generalization. Six-sigma can support marketing research if it utilizes marketing research tools and methodologies. The thing to keep in mind is the economic role of variation can differ in some marketing processes from traditional production environments. Too little tolerance for variation in marketing can lead to the classic “myopia” failure.Good luck.
