In the equation for sample size calculation for means,
# = (2sigma/delta)^2, I was wondering whether the default alpha level was .05
Also, is there a mathematical basis for calculating sample size based on the type of test you want to conduct, eg F-test, t-test, etc.

Yes, there is a different sample size calculation for each type of test. I strongly recommend a book available through American Society for Quality called “How to Choose the Proper Sample Size” by Gary G. Brush. You can find it at http://www.asq.org.
I also recommend you consider using statistical software that calculates sample sizes, such as Minitab, JMP, Statistica, StatGraphics, and others.0 -
