I took a six sigma course. The professor is excited about its results but I am not sure the strategy is that great. I think it is just another JIT, TQM, ect. Any thoughts?

Ask Mike Carnell. Today he has became the “used Six Sigma sales person” of this site.

You took the course and aren’t sure the strategy is great?  Maybe it was the coursework……  JIT and TQM do not use the same methodology as Six Sigma.  Both are different techniques than the lean and six sigma methodology although both desire the same general principles.
The power of the six sigma methodology cannot be found when sitting in an academic environment.  It can be found applying it to some process, including the academic processes.
I suspect your professor has seen case studies where it was impactful and that is why he was excited.

It is one thing to have snake oil merchants flogging the nonsense of six sigma to the naive, but it is quite pathetic to hear that a professor is actually teaching it.

    Hal,
Oh dear, another adherent of the king of snake oil peddlars (Burns)
So, tell us your sad tale of woe…Why the bitterness?   bad implementation?   Any relationship with Burns?
    Come on, fill us in!

I understand that it is the “new” trend, but JIT and TQM were in the same place at one point and time. Now they seem to be replaced by Six Sigma. I like the Six Sigma strategy myself, but now as a grad student I am trying to search for good and bad “stories” for my thesis.  I am falling short on empirical research and literature reviews on the subject. I have mostly came across reviews on methodology and in general – sucess stories.
I am asking for unbiased reseach. Thanks if you can help.

THANK YOU! I have not read the articles yet but it is nice to have information on both sides of the track!

    SS vs TQM etc.

    Student,
Review the article titled “Six Sigma Literature Review” on Dr. Hendry’s site. The reference list should give you a good starting point. This site is very biased (both pro and con), so go with the published literature for your dissertation.

JIT is a combination of Kanban and continous improvement which tends towards Lean Manufacturing.
TQM is a quality initiative that supports continous improvement.
However, Six Sigma in my own opinion is a combination of total quality management, statistical process control and continous improvement.
Six Sigma is unique because it is linked to the bottom line (££,$$, etc), which is what we are all in business for (at least profit making ones).
    I hope it helps

    Hi,
Six Sigma works at a Stratagy level that applies methodologies that had been available since the 1920s and were developed by luminaries like Shewhart, Deming, Juran, Ishikawa, Ohno, Shingo, Taguchi and Shainin…
End of the day a very powerful tool with visible $$$$ savings..!
    Regards,
    Rajesh.

It’s not a “new” trend.  It’s been used for 20 years.  You will get positives and negatives – especially the fallacies articles crap.  No process improvement methodology is perfect – they all have their +’s and -‘s.  I have found that the implementation strategy for any of these is what makes it a success.  For me, Lean, SS and TQM have worked in the different industries I have been involved in.

    Sir, you too are correct.
Perhaps you would like to play today’s trivia question?
See if you can go two for two.

The man who made SS what it is today, Mikel Harry, says “six sigma is 80% TQM”.
It’s the 20% that has been added that is crap.
