Hello to all,
I’ve been afforded an opportunity to lead a new Asset Management initiative and would like to use the DMAIC methodology to develop it, however, I’m a little concerned that establishing a new department might be too broad of a scope to treat it like a continuous improvement project. This request was initiatied as a result of unplanned capital purchase requirements that blind sided the firm and in some cases resulted in the inability to produce certain product lines. Although senior executives want better predictability for capital acquisition, this is only one of the many facets to Asset Management.
I was hoping that someone with a solid understanding of Asset Management and Six Sigma has been in this position before and would be able to provide some guidance in the early phase of this new initiative.
Thanks in advance,
Rich

I am a newbie to Six Sigma, moving towards Green Belt certification. Currently I am into to a similar situation, our company wants me to head the database team that could help the developers & the database guys to understand Asset Management, design & develop the product for our customers. I would like to implement DMAIC methodology for achieving the same.
Assistance required from experts of this field. Thanking you in anticipation.

As far as my understanding and my training goes in DMAIC, I was told that this cannot be used (or will not be effective) to setup a process, but if you have a process then it will be an excellent idea to use DMAIC.
What I understand from your message is that the process is not set and you want to use DMAIC to set it. I would suggest you to use BPMS to do this.
Would appreciate comments from others as well.
Regards
PKT0October 30, 2006 at 3:05 pm #146115There is a good chance that DMAIC applies — if you are currently procuring capital assets, then you *have* a process. It may not be an effective process (as evidenced by the pertubation in unplanned expenditure you mentioned), but it is a process.
There is an excellent Asset Management model, that has been translated and liked to the DMAIC process. I have a powerpoint overview that I’m happy to share with anyone who is interested. Email me at [email protected] and I’ll send it to you.0November 3, 2006 at 5:58 pm #146495If you are starting anew – it might be better to follow a DfSS roadmap, e.g., DCDOV or the like. It’s certainle going to be critical to use Voice of the Customer techniques to convert business leader expectations into project goals & objectives and to create operational definitions and specifications for the functional requirements.
