How might the concepts and methods of Six Sigma be pertinent to the retail industry? Are they at all relevant or do the concepts only apply to manufacturing? Are there quality processes other than Six Sigma that might be more appropriate for retail companies?

    Jody,

Yes, Six Sigma can be applied to the retail industry. Six Sigma can be used for process improvement in any industry. For process improvement in the retail industry you may use Six Sigma to identify your company’s core competencies, your customer’s (internal and external) CTQs, and which existing process are not adding value and should be improved or redesigned.

You may wish to begin two small projects, one customer focused to find out what the retail customer considers important. A second project, you may wish to consider, would be an internally focus project that adds $$ to your bottom line, (I don’t know the retail biz to well) but something like number of returns by month. What ever you identify, or your customers identify as a defect, count and measure the number of defects in your core processes.

The customer-focused project should improve customer loyalty, sales, and return customers. You will want the internally focused project to reduce costs in a structured, measured process.

Most importantly measure, measure, measure. If you do not have any historical data, benchmark against current competitors in your type of retail industry.

As for you last question, I am not so sure about other quality improvement process, but you may realize that your DMAIC project(s) may turn into DMADV projects along the way.

You may wish to read “The Six Sigma Way”.

    GOOD LUCK

My experience is that six sigma methods can produce near miracles in traffic producing advertising. I do it for continuing education for universities. All you do is look at registrations as your dependent variable, hypothesize from C and E charts what variables you think important to increase response, set up measurement via tracking methods (keyed copy) design tests of these hypotheses, all these steps are built into your marketing plan up front.

I’m a Six Sigma Black Belt and have worked in a variety of industries around the United States, for a decade, now. Now, I have a Retail Store, and am finding that Six Sigma is completely applicable. I beleive in getting a good baseline of the business, first. Collect good data, and good metrics for a few months, at least. You can also, start with some Lean tools, like a Current State VSM (Value Stream Map), and use it to guide you through small, manageable projects, (DMAIC, DMADV, or Lean). Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Hi Adrian, Mike,
Is there any alternate construct to Six Sigma, specifically for retail?
Are there some case studies we can access?

    Dear Mr. Bikash,
It was great to see that someone is working on framework towards establishment of 6S in retail. I am from an engineering background and have done my MBA in retailing and merchandising management. I see a lot of scope in improvements in each and every field of retail. It can be controlled and processes can be streamlined at every step. It can be Warehousing, Buying process, procurement, logistics, Shelf life, Fashion trends ( a little difficult as this is a subjective matter), stock turns, service standards like billing time / delivery time, store design and layout, proper lighting and airconditioning to improve efficiency of resources, and a lot many things.
There are very few people who look to retail with this angle. And I am hopeful that the number is growing and few people if they can get together can make a difference..
Do contact for helping and getting help,

    Bikash Kumar,
I am sure there are many here with more experience than I have in retail. However, different types of projects I have led include: in store signage and display, outdoor signage, salesperson scripting, and direct mail.
I am not sure if you are interested in learning how to use Six Sigma in these areas, but if so I will be glad to assist however I can.
As far as IT goes, I am definitely not your guy :-).
I hope you find what you are looking for here.
    Good Luck,
    Dr. Scott
